Super Bowl Prop Bets (for entertainment purposes only)

Unless you win. Then we want our cut.

When your team isn’t in the Super Bowl, you have to be able to create your own excitement in order to make things interesting during the big game. While the Minnesota Vikings will be sitting this one out, there are still ways to enhance your enthusiasm for Super Bowl LIII.

Most of those things involve some sort of wager, and that’s what we’ll be talking about here. For entertainment purposes only, of course.

Now, if you listened to the most recent episode of Norse Code. . .and, if you didn’t, shame on you. . .the guys went over a few different prop bets, and they actually did real, honest-to-goodness research on some of these things. I, on the other hand, place no such burdens on myself, so I’m going to wing this based on various wagers from the folks at OddsShark. Now, these are going to be “money line” bets, so here’s a quick review of how that works.

• A plus sign next to a number is how much you would win if you were to wager $100. For example, if the moneyline on something was +150, a $100 bet would bring back $250 if it pays off ($100 bet + $150 win).
• A minus sign next to a number is how much you would have to wager in order to win $100. For example, if the moneyline on something was -200, a $200 wager would bring back $300 ($200 bet + $100 win).

With that, let’s move on to some prop bets, shall we? We’ll mix some fun ones in with some actual football-related ones.

Will Gladys Knight’s National Anthem be over or under 107 seconds?

• Over -160
• Under +120

This is one of the more popular bets every year, and though I haven’t done a lot of research about how many times Gladys Knight has done the anthem before or anything, the Super Bowl strikes me as an opportunity to do it big. I’d take the over on this one.

Will any scoring drive take less time than it takes Gladys Knight to sing the National Anthem?

• Yes -110
• No -130

For this one, you’re obviously looking at a sub-2 minute drive (unless you think Gladys Knight is going to go the full Aretha Franklin on the anthem). I can easily see a scenario where a drive to end the half or end the game takes less than two minutes, so I’ll go with yes here.

What will be the result of the coin toss?

• Heads -105
• Tails -105

Yeah. . .not a lot of analysis to be had here. It’s, literally, a coin flip. (See what I did there?) If it helps, the coin has landed on tails 27 times in the previous 52 Super Bowls, giving it a slight edge. (See also: Gambler’s Fallacy) Just for fun, I’ll go with tails, since tails, allegedly, never fails.

What color Gatorade will be poured on the winning coach?

• Lime/Green/Yellow +225
• Orange +300
• Blue +375
• Red +400
• Clear/water +400
• Purple +1000

According to OddsShark, purple, orange, and clear are tied with the highest frequencies at four each, which makes it surprising that purple is so far down the list. But, the safe bet here might be good, high-quality H2O, so I’ll go with clear.

What will the price of Bitcoin do during the game?

• Price will be higher at the end of the game -130
• Price will be lower at the end of the game -110

Gotta be honest. . .haven’t gotten into the whole Bitcoin/Cryptocurrency phenomenon. I do know that it took a pretty hellacious nosedive not too long ago. I’ll go with lower on this one.

Will either kicker hit the upright and/or crossbar on a field goal or extra point?

• Yes +375
• No -605

Hitting the crossbar or the upright is a pretty rare occurrence, unless your name happens to rhyme with Lody Barkey. Given the fact that both Greg Zuerlein and Stephen Gostkowski are pretty good kickers, I’ll go with the “safe” bet here and say no.

Which commercial will appear first?

• Coke or variants -170
• Pepsi or variants +130

The cola wars rage on to this day, I guess. My guess is that a lot of people will be swayed by which pop they prefer. (Yes, it’s “pop.”) In following with that trend, I’m going to lean towards Pepsi on this one.

Longest yardage touchdown in the game

• Over 46.5 yards -115
• Under 46.5 yards -115

I think we’re going to see at least one long touchdown in this one, and I have a feeling that it’s going to come from the Rams. Their offense is pretty explosive, and I think they’re more likely to break a longer touchdown than the Patriots are. As far as the yardage, I’ll play the over 46.5 on this one.

Will a non-quarterback throw a touchdown?

• Yes +350
• No -600

Sure, the easy answer in this one is “no,” but come on. . .what’s that going to get you? Let’s be bold and take yes, because I think one of these two coaches is going to pull something out of the hat in this one.

Will any touchdown be overturned by replay?

• Yes +155
• No -220

After the non-troversy at the end of the NFC Championship Game, I think that the last thing anyone wants is the officials playing a crucial role in the outcome of this one. Of course, being the NFL officials, I’m guessing they won’t be able to avoid it, either. Let’s go with yes and assume that at least one touchdown will be overturned, rightly or wrongly, by the officials.
