Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 2/17/19.
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Pete Prisco’s Top 30 NFL free agents: Jadeveon Clowney, Demarcus Lawrence top defense-heavy list - CBS Sports
7) Brandon Graham: At 31, he’s an older player on my list. But he remains a pass-rush force on the edge and would be a nice addition for any team. His age might make his contract different from some of the others on this list. 21) Nick Foles: It looks like he’s going to hit the market if the Eagles don’t franchise tag him. If he does, he will be the top quarterback available. The price tag will be interesting. 27) Ronald Darby: When he’s on the field, he’s a good corner. The problem is he’s missed too much time the past two years. Even so, he’s only 25 years old. 28) Golden Tate: In a lean group of receivers, he’s going to get a decent deal. He’s not a No. 1 receiver, but he would be a nice No. 2 for a lot of teams.
Ranking the top 5 offensive tackles in the 2019 NFL Draft - BGN
Greg Little will get drafted higher than his polish demands but there’s a lot to like about his skill set. Feet and length allow him to get to the spot in his pass sets and has heavy hands when he lands them with accuracy and proper timing. The biggest area of opportunity for Little’s improvement will be in the run game. Working laterally is a chore, but he has the flexibility and athleticism to improve his quickness. Needs to be more patient when tracking second level defenders to increase his hit rate. Might need somebody to slap him before each game like John Henderson because he lacks a certain nasty to his game. Summary: Eventual starter at left tackle with immediate spot starter ability.
Tough Choices - Iggles Blitz
Based on Mike’s rankings, the Eagles have the top QB, the top WR, the #4 RB, the #3 DE, the #3 LB and the #3 CB. That is a lot of talent. I hadn’t really looked at the Eagles potential free agent losses as a whole. It caught me by surprise that the group is that good. If the Eagles lose most of those guys and limit what they do in free agency, they could be in for a big set of comp picks in 2020. That sounds easy, but Howie Roseman isn’t going to just watch players leave. He does have plenty of draft picks for the first time in a while and that will impact his thinking, but Roseman isn’t the type to keep both eyes on the future. He will make moves to make the Eagles better this year, not just for the future.
Three Alliance of American Football players who could interest the Eagles - PhillyVoice
As a player, Luis Perez has good size at 6’3, 222. He’s not the fleetest of foot, but his touch and accuracy looked good Week 1. Here are all of his throws in the Iron’s first game. The Eagles could be on the hunt for a third quarterback to develop this offseason, and if they could pluck one with legitimate skills from the AAF instead of using a draft pick on one, that would make a lot of sense. From Perez’s perspective, it would it make sense to seriously consider joining the Eagles for a chance to make the team, seeing as the Eagles have had obvious success developing Wentz, Nick Foles, and Nate Sudfeld.
NFC East rookie grades: Pro Bowl returns for Giants, Cowboys - NFL.com
Philly did enough with its 2018 draft crop to warrant an average grade. Goedert filled the void left by the retired Brent Celek and offered Carson Wentz/ Nick Foles another reliable pass-catching tight end. He’s no Zach Ertz at this stage, but Goedert was Philly’s fourth receiver of choice in 2018 and was considered the ninth-ranked tight end in the league by Pro Football Focus. Maddox wasn’t supposed to start nine games and play a pivotal role in a late run to the playoffs, but thems the breaks. There was no more injury-riddled unit in the postseason than the Eagles’ secondary, and though Maddox was abused in two playoff appearances, Philly wouldn’t have been there if it weren’t for his 59.9 passer rating allowed in the regular season, per PFF. Adams and Sullivan were nice depth finds who played legit roles at injury-riddled positions down the stretch.
Projecting landing spots for the NFL’s top free agents in 2019 - PFF
Brandon Graham, Los Angeles Rams: Because of his age, Graham will be a notch below the rest of the top edge-rushers price wise. The Rams are in win-now mode and have no need bigger than edge. Ronald Darby, New York Jets: They’d have a lot of money locked up at corner, but it would give them one of the best young secondaries in the NFL. With cap space to burn and limited offensive options, defense might have to be addressed first.
A quarterback buyer’s market? Why this NFL offseason is rare - ESPN
The Jaguars could be a better fit, since they have a roster poised to compete right away. However, there has been a lot of speculation they will pursue Foles. And ESPN Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco pointed out Jacksonville had minimal interest in Bridgewater before he was drafted with the No. 32 pick in 2014. And he believes there is still concern in the building about the major knee injury Bridgewater suffered in the 2016 preseason, wiping out nearly two full years of his career.
Malcolm Jenkins reacts to settlement in Colin Kaepernick collusion case - NBCSP
In the wake of news that the NFL had settled collusion cases brought forth by Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid, fellow activist and Eagle Malcolm Jenkins has weighed in. Despite some disagreements between the men in the past, Jenkins has always maintained that Kaepernick and Reid belonged in the league and thought NFL owners colluded to keep Kaepernick and Reid out of the NFL. Reid is now employed by the Carolina Panthers, but Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016.
Fran Duffy’s Combine Preview: Tight End - PE.com
Caleb Wilson, UCLA: No college tight end at the Combine has more career catches than Wilson, an undersized junior who declared for the draft quickly after the season ended. With 141 career receptions at an impressive 14.7 yards per catch, the former high school quarterback appears to be on the upswing. He did miss a large chunk of the 2017 season due to injury, but that makes his production even more impressive. The transfer from USC will need a strong workout to put himself in the Day 2 discussion.
Jaylen Watkins stays with Chargers - PFT
Chargers cornerback Jaylen Watkins, who missed the entire 2018 season after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason, will remain with the team for another year. Watkins is signing a one-year contract with the Chargers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
The 4 most underrated storylines of the 2019 NFL offseason - SB Nation
Kyler Murray picked football over baseball. The Browns signed Kareem Hunt, who is still awaiting punishment from the NFL. Antonio Brown bid Steelers fans farewell (though he remains on the team). The Ravens traded Joe Flacco to the Broncos. There’s a guy named Poop Johnson in the CFL. This week served as yet another reminder that there is no offseason in football. That’s even more true this year now that the AAF is here. We shouldn’t expect that to change, either. There are no shortage of questions we’ll get answers to in next few months. Who will get the franchise tag? Can Brown and the Steelers make up? Will Gronk retire? How small exactly IS Murray? Where will free-agents-to-be like Earl Thomas and Nick Foles end up? Will the NFL tweak its rules to avoid another Saints-like disaster? We’ll be following all of those situations closely — maybe more closely than we care to admit in public. But there are a few other underrated storylines that we think deserve more attention. Here are our four favorites this offseason.
