Becoming a popular pick for the Titans.
This mock draft season has seen analysts addressing two positions that aren’t primary needs for the Titans — cornerback and tight ends. Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson has been a popular target for the Titans around mocks everywhere so far. ESPN’s Todd McShay hopped on that train with his second mock of the season today.
Here’s what the ESPN analyst had to say on the Titans’ pick.
Delanie Walker is 34 and was injured last season, so the addition of Hockenson would bring stability to the position. He can block and is a real pass-catching weapon. I think he’s the best tight end in the class, and Marcus Mariota loves to target his tight ends.
Hockenson is viewed by most as the best tight end in the draft, but would Jon Robinson ignore other needs to address the future of the tight end position? Not to say that Hockenson wouldn’t play early — he would. But the Titans proved last year that they could get the job done at that position with Jonnu Smith, MyCole Pruitt, Luke Stocker and Anthony Firkser.
Sure there may not be a difference maker in that crop, but Delanie Walker plans on returning, which actually gives the Titans a pretty good group there with two decent young players in Smith and Firkser. Adding Hockenson may pay dividends down the road, but the Titans have much bigger needs on the offensive line, receiver, defensive line and at pass rusher.
Of course, that can all change after free agency, but I highly doubt Jon Robinson checks off all of those needs in March.
