We check on each Raiders position ahead of free agency to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Unstable, Serious, or Critical.
Starter: Derek Carr
Backup: AJ McCarron, Nathan Peterman
The judgment of Carr’s season depends on who you ask. Those who would defend him would point to his surpassing 4000 yards for the first time in his career and his 10-game streak without an interception. They would also point to the shoddy offensive line that contributed to him getting sacked 51 times. They will point to his 2016 season as proof that he is capable of making big time plays.
Those who would criticize him would say he had the lowest touchdown totals of his career (19) and those yards totals and the streak without an interception doesn’t mean much considering how often he chose to check the ball down instead of pushing it deep and therefore not doing enough to get them more than their four wins last season. The Raiders are also 10-22 over the past two seasons.
Gruden traded a 5th round pick for McCarron. Then he signed Peterman who is cheaper and who Gruden has gushed about in the past, but who has had a pretty dismal NFL career.
Condition: Unstable
There has been more discussion this offseason about whether Derek Carr is the future of this franchise than I’ve ever heard before. Those questions are certainly valid ones. But would Gruden make that change after one season with Carr? We’re at a critical juncture for Carr. Either Gruden will give him another season to see if he can loosen up, or go for greener grass if given the chance and look to trade Carr. I would go with the former, but only Gruden knows where he stands with Carr. There’s also a chance the Raiders could cut McCarron in favor of the cheaper Peterman.
