If the Cardinals want to start with a clean(er) slate in 2019, here are some players they could consider releasing.
Coming off of a dismal 2018 NFL season, the Cardinals will be looking to create plenty of turnover heading into 2019 with their brand new head coach, Kliff Kingsbury. Not only has the entire coaching staff been turned upside down, but the roster figures to go through some major changes as well.
So who are some players that Steve Keim could look to make some tough decisions on and release from the roster? Let’s take a look at some below.
Brandon Williams: From a production standpoint, this isn’t a very difficult decision to make, but from a draft viewpoint, Keim may have some reluctance in cutting a former 3rd round pick. Williams has simply never panned out to become a cornerback the way the team thought he may. Yes, he is an athletic freak and still on a relatively cheap rookie deal, but perhaps it may be better to add someone else to the roster and mix things up a bit.
T.J. Logan: Logan will now be under the tutelage of his third different coaching staff in as many years and, to this point, he hasn’t shown the kind of promise in the return game that many had hoped. Punt returns will likely be handled by Christian Kirk for the foreseeable future (assuming he is healthy), so that leaves Logan with a potential 3rd running back slot and a kick returner job to fight for. He has shown us very small glimpses of his elusiveness and speed, but perhaps not enough to continue warranting one of 53 roster spots.
D.J. Humphries: This would easily be the toughest decision Keim would (and possibly should) make. Humphries simply cannot find a way to stay healthy to live up to his first round selection status. And when he is on the field, he is an average left tackle at best. Throw in the fact that he is due $9.625 million this year and the Cardinals could save all of that money by voiding his option year, Humphries is definitely a potential cap casualty. If the Cardinals do cut Humphries, they will obviously have their eyes set on someone to replace him either through free agency or the NFL Draft.
There are some players that I left out, but I wanted to get some feedback from the community! Who do you think the Cardinals could make some tough decisions on and decide to part ways with? Let us know in the comments section!
