Could Beast Mode be back in Oakland in 2019? The Raiders appear open to it.
The moment the news dropped that the Raiders had agreed to terms with the Coliseum Authority to play in Oakland in 2019, the door seemed to open for the possibility Marshawn Lynch could return to the team. As we know, Lynch came out of retirements two years ago to play for his hometown team and donning Silver & Black is wholly dependent upon playing in Oakland.
Wednesday Mike Mayock told the East Bay Times that he and Jon Gruden have been in contact with Marshawn’s agent Doug Hendrickson about Lynch potentially returning for 2019 and that essentially the ball is in Marshawn’s court.
“I think he’s still trying to figure out what he wants to do. And obviously we’d be open to potentially having him back depending on what his position is,” said Mayock.
“A lot of it has to come from Marshawn (and) what he wants to do,” Mayock continued. “How quickly he feels like he can come back from the injury. What he wants to (earn). Does he want to make a commitment to going back to work again? I just love the fact that if he’s in the running-back room we’ve got someone for our young guys to look up to and learn how to work from.”
Marshawn was on pace for a 1000-yard season when he was lost to a groin injury in week six. Doug Martin then came in and also played well, also averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He too is headed for free agency and he too is an Oakland native. Would the Raiders bring both of them back? With Jalen Richard as the receiver out of the backfield, that trio turned out well last season, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
The team also held onto DeAndre Washington last season, so should Chris Warren III continue to the show the potential he showed last preseason and stay healthy, he could make the roster as well. If that were the plan, running back would no longer be considered a high priority in the draft.
Free agency opens on March 13, so we should get some kind of clarity before then.
