Capping the Combine with more standout athletes.
The theme of 2019’s NFL Combine has definitely been the impressive athleticism in each group. Size, speed, and strength athletes have placed their mark on the draft class every day of the event. This was capped off on Monday with a string of 4.3 forties and 40-inch verticals. Let’s talk about the players who stood out from this group of prospects as we wrap up our Combine coverage:
Juan Thornhill, S, Virginia
The 6’0” 205 pound converted cornerback jumped out of the building on Monday with a 44 inch vertical leap and an 11’9” broad jump. He also put up 21 bench press reps and ran a 4.42 forty yard dash.
David Long, CB, Michigan
It was a fantastic day for Long, whose best workout was a fluid 6.45 three cone drill. He ran a 4.45 forty yard dash, had a 3.97 short shuttle, and a 39.5 vertical leap.
Justin Layne, CB, Michigan State
When you measure 6’2” 192 pounds as a cornerback, any impressive athleticism is a bonus. Layne’s 4.50 forty yard dash was a passing grade, given his size, but his explosion stood out in other drills. His 11’2” broad jump, 6.90 three cone drill, and 4.09 short shuttle indicate a player with plenty of agility to go along with his length.
Marvell Tell, S, USC
Tell didn’t run the forty yard dash or participate in the bench press, but all of his other workouts were outstanding. Among corners and safeties, Tell had the second-fastest three cone drill (6.63 seconds) and third-fastest short shuttle (4.01 seconds). His 11’4” broad jump was second-best, and his 42” vertical was third-best.
De’Andre Baker, CB, Georgia
Baker reportedly didn’t put much effort into training for the Combine, and that didn’t pay off for the cornerback prospect. His 4.52 forty yard dash was a mediocre result, and he didn’t even clear ten feet on the broad jump. Baker didn’t participate in the vertical leap or agility drills, which could’ve cleaned up his profile a bit.
Jaquan Johnson, S, Miami
As a player and teammate, Johnson is a round one prospect. His lack of size and standout athleticism, though, will cause him to drop into the third day of the draft (or further). The undersized safety had a 4.69 forty yard dash, a 33” vertical leap, and a 121” broad jump, making it tough to count on his range at the pro level.
