After weeks of Jachai Polite and a tight end landing on the Packers in mock drafts, the combine has pushed new names to the fore.
The 2019 NFL Scouting Combine has finally ended, which means the Green Bay Packers and other teams have another major piece of the draft intel at their disposal. Armed with that information, SB Nation’s Dan Kadar has produced another mock draft. This one breaks with many of the assumptions made during the first few months of the draft process.
12. Green Bay Packers: Brian Burns, Edge, Florida State
Offseason needs: Edge defender, tight end, guard, defensive line
Burns did enough at the combine to separate himself from some of the other pass rushers Green Bay will consider with the 12th pick. Most importantly was his size, weighing in at 249 pounds and breaking 4.55 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Burns needs to get better against the run, but he’s pro-ready as a pass rusher.
After many weeks of projecting Florida edge rusher Jachai Polite to Green Bay, Kadar sees a shift based on the athletic measurements performed at the combine. In this mock, the Packers land Florida State’s Brian Burns, who tested extremely well in Indianapolis while answering questions about his weight. Burns proved productive from Day 1 in college, registering 8.5 sacks as a true freshman and finishing with 23 for his career. That combination of athletic profile and production bode well for him at the next level.
30. Green Bay Packers: (via New Orleans): Chris Lindstrom, G, Boston College
Offseason needs: Edge defender, tight end, guard, defensive line
There are a few directions the Packers could go with the 30th pick. There will be good tight ends here, they could gamble on Simmons’ upside with what is essentially a redshirt year, or go for an offensive lineman. Lindstrom’s stock is on the rise after the combine, and he comes into the NFL with a lot of experience at guard.
Arguably no offensive lineman has profiled as a more “Packers” prospect than Chris Lindstrom. In addition to his absurd athletic testing, Lindstrom started over 40 games and performed at a high level for Boston College. He even saw time at both tackle and guard. Green Bay might address the offensive line before the draft. However, if the team still needs a boost along the trenches come April, Lindstrom could serve the offense well in the short and long term.
