Today at 2pm EST on TNT, the Orlando Apollos play at the Birmingham Iron in the match-up of the year. These are the two best teams in the entire league. It’s just too bad they’re in the same conference, otherwise this would also likely be your championship game. Orlando airs it out and tries to win shoot-out style games. Birmingham plays a balanced game and leans on its defense to keep games close. What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? We shall certainly find out today! That said, my money is on Orlando to win on the road. Garrett Gilbert over Luis Perez. Charles Johnson over Trent Richardson. Etc etc.
Tonight at 8pm EST on NFL Network, the Salt Lake Stallions play at the San Diego Fleet. Up until last week, I was afraid all was lost for Salt Lake. The Fleet have issues of their own. The issue is that neither team has an NFL-caliber QB at the helm. The Fleet have Mike Bercovici at QB, and he will forever be remembered as the guy that got his helmet knocked off as part of a sack that did not draw a penalty in the opening minutes of Week 1. The Stallions have Josh Woodrum at QB and appear to be headed in the right direction. I think the Stallions get a win on the road.
Sunday at 4pm EST on CBS Sports Network, the Memphis Express play at the Atlanta Legends. On paper this is the battle of the bottom of the barrel. However, there is some nuance to this match up. Memphis QB Zach Mettenberger and Atlanta QB Aaron Murray were roommates at UGA before Mettenberger transferred to LSU. They’re very familiar with each other and even though they don’t actually play against each other in game, it’ll be interesting to see what each team has on the opposing QB given their relationship. I expect Aaron Murray to have a big game and for Atlanta to get a second win in a row.
Sunday at 8pm EST on NFL Network, the San Antonio Commanders play at the Arizona Hotshots. Both of these teams are 2-2. The good news about this game is that both starting QBs are guys I have as potential NFL starters in Logan Woodside and John Wolford. Numbers don’t lie, and the Hotshots have better weapons on offense in RB Jhurell Pressley and WR Rashad Ross. Add that to playing at home and I have a hard time thinking Arizona will lose.
