Franchise tag fight could be looming for Chiefs and Dee Ford | NBC Sports
That’s possibly why the Chiefs have leaked the notion that Ford could be available in trade, with the vague implication that he may not fit in the new defense. Well, if he doesn’t fit, why did they tag him? Unless they tagged him simply to trade him (which would be a CBA violation, technically), the equivocation could be aimed at setting up an argument that they don’t really know whether he’ll be a linebacker or a defensive end, echoing the verbal tiptoeing in which new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo recently engaged.

Former NFL agent Joel Corry estimates that a long-term deal for Ford could exceed Justin Houston’s $16.8 million per year ($52.5 million guaranteed) contract. And while that might be a considerable chunk of money, it presents an opportunity to lower the Giants’ cap number if they were to sign Ford to an extension. To do so they could structure the contract such that he has a very low base salary the first year and the larger numbers don’t hit until Eli Manning’s contract is off the books in 2020. With Vernon traded and Manning retired, the Giants would have $96 million with which to work that year (which could be as high as $125 million with a couple other moves) fitting Ford in should be do-able.
The Chiefs placed their franchise tag on edge-rusher Dee Ford but are listening to trade offers because he is not an ideal fit for their new defense, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Giants should call. And they should offer safety Landon Collins on a franchise tag in return.
Collins, 25, is a three-time Pro Bowler whose best play came under Steve Spagnuolo, the former Giants defensive coordinator who now is running a 4-3 scheme with the Chiefs. Ford, 27, is coming off his first Pro Bowl season and is a better match for the Giants’ 3-4 scheme.

As it stands, the Chiefs will have to wait until next year to do what they wish they could do now — cut him.
Berry has let the Chiefs down, too. This isn’t his fault, but the result is the same. He spent the entire 2018 season in a perpetual “day-to-day” portal that became a source of dark humor with the fan base and constant frustration within the organization.

The advice to 6-foot-3, 303-pounder Quinnen Williams was to stand on a 4.87 unofficial 40-yard dash on Sunday at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine and pass on a second chance to show scouts how fast he can run.
But the former Alabama defensive tackle had other ideas, and bested even that. Williams followed with a 4.83 official time on his second try.
“Tyree Jackson just tried to kill him,” NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah joked after a shot from Jackson skipped off a receiver’s hands. “He just threw a lightning bolt.”
That was only the beginning. Within minutes, the broadcast was focused almost entirely on Jackson throwing lasers in the drill, with former Dallas Cowboy wideout Michael Irvin breaking down in laughter and former Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens star receiver Steve Smith actually making his way over to the Buffalo quarterback to give him a piece of his mind. Smith’s message? Stop trying to take the heads off receivers.
Eventually cameras cut to Smith lecturing Jackson on the field before the drill had even ended – all while Irvin and the booth laughed hysterically.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce recently had offseason ankle surgery, according to a new report from NFL Network’s Mike Garagolo and Ian Rapoport.
Garafolo’s official tweet on the matter describes the procedure as a “cleanup” and also says that the 29-year-old tight end will miss some if not all of the Chiefs organized team activities.
