Bills can get a head start on free agency with players who were cut

A handful on players could be on the Bills radar heading into the new league year

Players who are set to become free agents aren't allowed to start signing with teams until the 2018 contracts officially expire at 4:00 p.m. Eastern on March 13th. (They begin the legal tampering window on March 11.) Players who had their contract terminated by being released are free game from the moment they are cut, and there are a number of guys the Buffalo Bills could have their eye on.

G T.J. Lang

Lang will be entering his 11th season at 31 years of age. He has been a reliable piece on the offensive line for the majority of his career. His 2018 was cut short in November when the Detroit Lions placed him on IR due to a neck injury. Lang is an instant upgrade over John Miller and Vlad Ducasse at right guard for the next couple of years on a team desperate to protect the quarterback.

WR Pierre Garcon

Garcon is coming off two of his least productive seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. Partly due to injury and lack of stability at the quarterback position for the Niners. In just eight games in 2018, Garcon had 24 catches for 286 yards and a touchdown before his season was cut short with arthroscopic knee surgery. Garcon isn't a flashy player but his veteran presence would be felt in a young receiver room with the most experience coming from Zay Jones and Isaiah McKenzie, who both just finished their second NFL seasons.

DT Malik Jackson

A former member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jackson is a pass-rushing specialist from the defensive tackle position. The Bills had a poor pass rush last year and need to replace Kyle Williams. Sure, they just signed Jordan Phillips to a medium-sized deal and have a massive contract for Star Lotulelei, but Jackson and Phillips could split reps and make it worth the money Jackson is no doubt looking for.

CB Kevin Johnson

The Bills already had Johnson in for a visit. His 2018 season was cut short due to concussions but he says he’s been medically cleared. The former first-round pick of the Houston Texans has also visited the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets.

Buffalo has already signed offensive lineman Spencer Long, cut by the New York Jets in February, and had former New England Patriots tight end Dwayne Allen in for a visit, though Allen signed with the Miami Dolphins. There was also their rumored interest in trading for enigmatic Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown. The Bills are clearly not resting on their laurels when it comes to free agency this offseason.
