Bills missing homegrown young veterans thanks to roster turnover

The Buffalo Billsneed to spend over the next two years is compounded by the fact that they have astoundingly few “middle-aged” veterans or players finishing up their rookie contracts to spend cap dollars on. The constant management turnover has created a situation where the Bills do not have one player drafted by the team from 2009 (Aaron Maybin, Eric Wood) through 2015 under contract moving forward. Guard John Miller is the last one drafted in 2015 and is set to be an unrestricted free agent.

This dearth of a “middle-aged” core has led to the Bills going out and buying one in free agency. Key contributors Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer and Star Lotulelei have been signed in free agency by the current regime. Other veteran free agent additions such as the now-released Charles Clay, Russell Bodine, Patrick DiMarco have also been brought in to replace departed drafted players. While the Bills have a great young core and valued veteran leaders, the team’s gutted “middle-aged” group will continue to require additions from outside the organization. Fortunately, the Bills have plenty of cash to spread around doing so.
