Browns are signing TE Demetrius Harris to a 2-year deal

Cleveland adds their backup tight end to replace Darren Fells.

Now we see why the Cleveland Browns parted ways with TE Darren Fells after a decent season a year ago. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns will sign TE Demetrius Harris, formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Harris entered the league in 2013 with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. That was the first year that John Dorsey was the Chiefs’ general manager, so he is quite familiar with the 6-7, 230-pounder. Harris served as the second tight end to Travis Kelce in Kansas City, and now he’ll do the same in Cleveland for David Njoku.

In 2017, Harris caught 18 passes for 224 yards and 1 touchdown. Last year, he caught 12 passes for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns. Brent Sobleski of The OBR puts it well: the Browns are basically getting a younger, and slightly better blocker than Fells. Harris does have a history of drops, but the team can live with that if he’s targeted in the right situations.
