Colts sign wide receiver Devin Funchess as first free agent addition in 2019

The Indianapolis Colts landed their first free agent of the offseason, agreeing to terms with 24-year-old wide receiver Devin Funchess, formerly of the Carolina Panthers. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was the first to report:

The one-year deal, reportedly maxing out at $13 million, addresses arguably the biggest position of need for Indianapolis heading into the offseason.

Last season, Funchess caught 44 balls for an average of 12.5 yards per reception, amassing 549 yards and four touchdowns. His best season came in 2017, where he caught 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 starts. He’s averaged 13.9 yards per reception over his career, with 21 total touchdowns.

The Michigan product was a second-round pick for the Carolina Panthers in the 2015 NFL Draft, and finished out his rookie contract there. With the Colts, Funchess will presumably slide into the No. 2 receiving role behind TY Hilton and ahead of a returning Deon Cain — who missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury. Funchess will step into a Colts’ locker room as another big target for Andrew Luck as the tallest receiver on the team. He’s also the same height as tight ends Eric Ebron and Ryan Hewitt.

Financially, Funchess becomes the second-highest paid receiver behind Hilton. With a one-year deal, he’ll have the chance to prove his worth for a longer extension next offseason, while the Colts avoid storing long-term money into a non home-grown talent.
