Combine Recap: Quarterbacks

Here are some of the highlights from a few of the quarterbacks participating at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine

Believe it or not, the Buccaneers may be in the market for a quarterback. No, Jameis Winsston isn’t going anywhere, but Ryan Fitzpatrick is. It isn’t exactly clear whether or not the Bucs truly believe that Ryan Griffin is the back-up quarterback they believe in and will carry into the season, so looking at guys in this draft will allow Arians to work on developing a quarterback without Winston looking over his shoulder and wondering if he’s going to lose his job.

This isn’t exactly a mind blowing crop of quarterbacks, and the Buccaneers will not be taking any of the top names - Dwayne Haskins, Kyler Murray, or Drew Lock. They could be looking at some of these day three guys - and they have already had a formal meeting with West Virginia’s Will Grier.

Here are some of the guys that stood out that the Buccaneers may have interest in;

Will Grier

Grier was impressive in his press conference, displaying a sense of maturity and understanding of the challenges ahead of him. In his workout, however, he was hot and cold. Some of his passes were on the money, perfectly timed - then some were errant and ugly. Grier has a lot of work to do at the next level but will make a solid backup somewhere next season.

Trace McSorley

McSorley is one of those guys where the moment is never too big for him. Coming from Penn State and being under the big spotlight throughout the 2018 season, McSorley rose to the occasion every time. That’s not something you can measure or teach. He was one of the better passers during the drills, but has some work to do on his deep ball accuracy and timing. Has the ability and mindset to become one of the better quarterbacks out of this class.

Kyle Shurmur

Prototypical quarterback size, but not going to knock anyone’s socks off with his arm strength and needs to focus on throwing off his front foot, but Shurmur had a good showing on Saturday. Like McSorley, he was solid on the short to intermediate routes and the timing was solid, but needs work on his deep ball. Something that can be finessed at the next level with the right coaching.

Tyree Jackson

Jackson is massive at 6’7”, but his large frame and long arms leads to a long throwing motion that could cause problems against NFL defensive speed. He has arm talent and can rifle a ball into small windows, but coming out of the MAC he didn’t exactly face elite competition. There will be a learning curve for Jackson that will be steeper than most of the other quarterbacks in this class when it comes to the level of talent across the field from him. Likely a day three guy, but has the raw talent and tools to develop into a reliable backup.

Ultimately, this isn’t the type of quarterback class we’ve seen over the past few years, but there is some NFL level talent - they just may not be starting NFL talent. If the Buccaneers want to explore the trade market for their backup quarterback, they can snag one of these promising prospects on day three that may have a better shot at making a roster than some of their day three picks in recent seasons.
