Could LSU tight end Foster Moreau be a Day 3 steal for Giants?

If the Giants feel the need to add another tight end, Foster Moreau is an intriguing option.

The 2019 NFL Draft is a deep and talented one at a few positions. It is so deep and talented at the defensive front seven, wide receiver positions, and offensive tackle positions that prospects at some other positions can get overlooked.

For instance, this is a very good draft for tight ends with excellent prospects at the top and talent throughout the position group. But even so, there could be players who present good values to be found on the third day of the draft. And for a team that wants to run the ball, such as the New York Giants, finding a value at tight end could be a good use of a glut of picks on the third day of the draft.

If so, the Giants could target LSU tight end Foster Moreau, who spent a lot of time blocking in college, but also presents intriguing upside as a pass catcher.

Measurables

Pros

  • Prototypical frame for a tight end.
  • Excellent athlete for the position.
  • Flashes the ability to drive defenders as a blocker.
  • Effective pass protector. Mirrors pass rushers well and generally gets good position.
  • Able to line up in multiple positions, in-line, fullback, slot, and wide receiver.
  • Enthusiastic player. Brings effort on every play.
  • Looks for work as a blocker.

Cons

  • Route running needs work.
  • Protects the ball, but hands need work catching the ball.
  • Inconsistent technique as a run blocker.

Prospect Video

What They’re Saying

“LSU TE Foster Moreau presents value for teams who require/prefer additional blockers at the line of scrimmage beyond their starting line. Moreau has an effective feel for pass protection and presents additional upside as a run blocker if he’s able to establish more consistency with his hands at first contact. Moreau is a limited upside receiving prospect who projects best as a potential TE2, should not be considered a viable receiving feature in the long term.”

Does He Fit The Giants?

Moreau would fit the Giants if they opt to make Rhett Ellison a cap casualty.

He is a good blocking tight end with good power and core strength, though he does need to get better at consistently striking defenders. When he does strike accurately and gets inside leverage, he shows the ability to drive and leverage with good pad level. Moreau is experienced blocking from a variety of positions, from the backfield to in-line, to detatched, to a receiver position.

Moreau’s biggest weaknesses come from his lack of use in LSU’s passing game, which itself has been anemic at best. He has upside as a receiver, but will need to be developed in that regard. If that aspect of his game can be developed, Moreau should be a good secondary option or safety blanket as a number two tight end.
