D.K. Metcalf has monster Combine performance

His Combine performance surpassed Julio Jones across the board. If the 49ers want him, they’re probably going to need to be aggressive.

The San Francisco 49ers have been busy meeting with wide receivers at the 2019 NFL Combine, and they saw a bit of a show on Saturday. Ole Miss wide receiver D.K. Metcalfhe of the absurd physique and low body fat — set the Combine on fire with his workout. Metcalf stands 6-3 3/8, 228 lbs with 9 7/8 hands, and with that size produced a 4.33 40, 40.5 inch vertical, 27 reps of 225 lbs on the bench press, an 11’2 broad jump.

Metcalf’s 40 time was the fastest NFL Network has ever recorded for someone weighing at least 225 pounds. If you’re looking for a physical comparison, Jordan Schultz posted this comparison of Metcalf to Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones.

The performance is filthy and has people talking about a guy that is all over draft boards. Mel Kiper ranks him No. 14 on his big board, while Matt Miller has him 32nd on his big board. In his most recent 2019 NFL mock draft, SB Nation’s Dan Kadar projected him No. 26 to the Indianapolis Colts.

Metcalf is an intriguing talent given the physical trait, but comes with plenty of questions. He suffered a neck injury last season that cost him five games. He finished the season with 26 receptions for 569 yards and five touchdowns. In 2017, he had 39 receptions for 646 yards and seven touchdowns. He saw his 2016 true freshman season cut short by a foot injury.

A.J. Brown is the better receiver out of Ole Miss, and likely will go in the middle of the first round. If Al Davis were alive, Metcalf would be the first receiver off the board. As it stands, he could go anywhere from mid-first round to early second round, and I don’t think it would surprise anybody.

If he’s there when the 49ers are picking at No. 36, I would have no problem pulling the trigger on the upside. He could be nothing more than a workout warrior who can’t stay healthy, but the upside is pretty massive.

I’ve actually seen people suggest him at No. 2. I’m not going to say there is not chance that happens, but you better be reeeeeeeeally sure about that pick. That’s the kind of pick that either puts this offense into another stratosphere, or results in someone getting fired — particularly if someone like Nick Bosa is on the board at No. 2. Down the road, this kind of pick would look either incredibly smart or incredibly stupid. I have zero idea which one it will be, but, man, you better be sure.
