Draft Wire Predicts Two Trades for Buccaneers on Day One of NFL Draft

Luke Easterling weighs in with his post-combine four-round mock draft

In Luke Easterling’s mock draft attempt following the conclusion of the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans get to see a lot of action involving their favorite team as Jason Licht orchestrates not one, but two trades in the first round alone.

First, with Kentucky’s Josh Allen and Alabama’s Quinnen Williams off the board, Tampa Bay trades back with the Denver Broncos to pick ten so John Elway can grab his quarterback of the future in Drew Lock from Missouri.

Three potential Bucs targets go off the board between five and ten as Brian Burns lands with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Greedy Williams heads to the Detroit Lions and Jawaan Taylor goes to the Buffalo Bills to play tackle for the quarterback Josh Allen.

So, at pick ten, the Bucs do what you would expect and trade back again! This time, Licht moves back to the fifteenth pick and swaps spots with the Washington Redskins who then select Kyler Murray from the Oakland A’s - oops - Oklahoma Sooners.

LSU linebacker goes to the Cincinnati Bengals one pick later (boo) and Montez Sweat leaves to the Green Bay Packers at pick twelve.

Yet another potential Bucs target is off the board at pick fourteen to the Atlanta Falcons, who take Houston’s Ed Oliver. So, Tampa Bay is back on the clock, and they trade again! Just kidding, finally the Bucs take a player, and they get Alabama Crimson Tide tackle (?) Jonah Williams.

Whew! Talk about a busy day one. But in the end, the Buccaneers come away with Williams who I assume will be playing right tackle in this scenario as Easterling does in fact identify him as a tackle. Taking it one step further, it’s likely a pick such as this one would lead to the release of veteran Demar Dotson.

Day two doesn’t go long before Easterling predicts another trade, as the Bucs swap their 39th pick for San Francisco’s 36th and take Florida’s Jachai Polite. The EDGE rusher hurt his draft stock in Indianapolis showing up ill-prepared and taking some missteps during his media sessions - and apparently in team meetings as well.

It doesn’t doom him too badly though, or maybe Easterling thinks he’ll make up ground at his pro day, and Licht floats a second-rounder getting Todd Bowles some pass rushing help.

With their second, second-round pick, Tampa Bay grabs Boston College interior lineman Chris Lindstrom and come back five picks later to take Penn State’s Amani Oruwariye (CB).

Surprisingly, that was it for the second round, but of course there’s another round to go through on day two. Making no waste of the third, Licht takes Ohio State’s Parris Campbell and Arizona State’s Renell Wren, which makes me smile for reasons listeners of the Locked On Bucs Podcast probably know better than readers at Bucs Nation.

With the 96th overall selection in the NFL Draft, and concluding their day two, the Bucs select running back, Benny Snell from Kentucky. The fourth round is much less exciting for fans of this franchise as the team finally grabs a linebacker to help our Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander (who signed prior to the draft) and Kendell Beckwith (who was cleared fully by medical staff!).

A lot of action, many trades and even some picks nets the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

OT, Jonah Williams (Alabama)

EDGE, Jachai Polite (Florida)

OL, Chris Lindstrom (Boston College)

CB, Amani Oruwariye (Penn State)

WR, Parris Campbell (Ohio State)

DL, Renell Wren (Arizona State)

RB, Benny Snell (Kentucky)

LB, Vosean Joseph (Florida)

And this is just in four rounds! Double the picks equals double the fun, and there’s basically nothing Licht could do in rounds five, six and seven to make me not love this draft class.

Here’s hoping Easterling is typing this having come back from the future. By the way, the Bucs specific predictions about players like Kwon Alexander and Kendell Beckwith are my own fun additions to this mock draft review.
