Ike is staying in Philly.
The Philadelphia Eagles have signed starting left guard Isaac Seumalo to a three-year contract extension, according to an official announcement from the team.
The terms of the deal are yet to be disclosed, which could suggest it’s a bargain for the Eagles. Agents aren’t exactly in a rush to put out modest contract numbers.
Seumalo, 25, was previously set to play on the final year of his rookie contract in 2019. The Eagles’ third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft is now signed through the 2022 NFL season.
Seumalo’s had some ups and downs to this point in his career. Offensive line injuries forced him into starting three games at guard and one at tackle as a rookie. Seumalo was essentially awarded the Eagles’ starting left guard job heading into 2017 but he was benched after just two very bad games. A rotation of Chance Warmack and Stefen Wisniewski replaced Seumalo before the Eagles finally stuck with Wis at left guard en route to their Super Bowl win. It was then Wis who got replaced by Seumalo after four starts in 2018.
Wis said he believed he wasn’t benched for performance reasons but Pro Football Focus grades suggest otherwise. Wis ranked 62nd out of 88 guards in 2018 while Seumalo was better at 38th out of 88.
Seumalo’s contract extension confirms he’ll be starting for the Eagles in 2019. The team values his versatility to play literally every spot on the offensive line (tackle, guard, center). It’s possible he even replaces Jason Kelce one day, though Kelce just signed an extension that puts him under contract with Philly through 2021.
It’s worth noting that the Eagles could trade Wis to save $3 million this offseason with just over $700,000 in dead money. The problem with doing that is it leaves Philly thin at guard should Brandon Brooks, who is recovering from an Achilles injury, not be healthy in time for the regular season.
The Seumalo extension is hardly a thrilling move but the Eagles really value building through the trenches and he’s a young piece who can be part of this team’s core moving forward.
