Falcons sign QB Matt Schaub to two year extension worth $3.78 million

Matt will keep backing up Matt.

The Atlanta Falcons officially signed Matt Schaub to a new deal a little while ago, and now we know the terms. It’s a two year, $3.78 million pact with $750,000 guaranteed and a team option for 2020, making it just about the most sensible deal he could’ve signed for.

Schaub was making over $4 million per year on his last deal, which stoked fears that this contract would be more of the same. Instead, Schaub’s averaging less than $2 million per season, and the Falcons can cut ties with him in 2020 if Kurt Benkert or another young option on the practice squad develops to the point they feel comfortable doing so. Given Schaub’s age, his play when he has gotten on to the field, and Ryan’s durability, this is a much more palatable deal. It still keeps a veteran many Falcons have talked up as a teacher and locker room presence around, as well.

The 15-year veteran quarterback joined the Falcons before the 2016 season, after previously being drafted by the team in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. Schaub then spent 2007 through 2013 playing for the Houston Texans, where he still holds the franchise record for touchdowns (124), passing yards (23,221), and completions (1,951).

The extension is for two years, and should likely be viewed as a safety net for Matt Ryan. Since rejoining the Falcons in 2016, Schaub has only thrown 10 passes. Some fans have clamored for the team to invest in a younger quarterback to learn behind Matt Ryan, but that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon with this news.
