Former Vikings assistant Marc Trestman lands job in XFL

He’ll be the head coach of the league’s Tampa Bay franchise

With the hype surrounding the Alliance of American Football in its inaugural season, it’s easy to forget that there’s another spring football league that will be hitting the field starting in 2020. Yes, we’re waiting for the return of the XFL, and the league has slowly been revealing its new teams, as well as the men that will be coaching those teams.

One of those men is Marc Trestman. It was announced a couple of days ago that Trestman will be the head coach of the league’s franchise in Tampa Bay, who has spent time as a member of the Minnesota Vikings’ coaching staff.

Trestman actually came to training camp with the Vikings as a player in 1979, but did not make the team. After spending some time at the University of Miami as a part of their coaching staff, he started his NFL coaching career with the Vikings as their running backs coach in 1985 and 1986. He had a second stint with the team as the quarterbacks coach in 1990 and 1991.

Most of Trestman’s success has come north of the border, as he’s coached three Grey Cup championship teams. He won twice with the Montreal Alouettes (2009, 2010) and once with the Toronto Argonauts (2017). He also served as the head coach of the Chicago Bears in 2013 and 2014 before being fired.

Congratulations to Marc Trestman on being one of the first head coaches in the history of the new XFL.
