Gang Green Nation Reader Spotlight: JoCaT33

The Basics:

What’s your name and/or username? Josephine/JoCaT33

What city/state do you live in? Currently Denver, Colorado. I grew up in Queens (Whitestone, to be exact).

How old are you? A lady never tells, and gentlemen never ask.

The Miscellaneous:

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? I can’t really put my finger on any one piece of advice I would call “best”. But, one of the mantras I live by is that failure is only failure if you quit—a failure is simply an opportunity to learn and try again. Another is if you always do your best, you’ll never have any regrets.

If you could grab lunch with anybody in the past, present or future—dead or alive, who would it be and why? Believe it or not, this was the hardest question for me to answer, but I finally decided on Jackson Galaxy. For those of you who don’t know, he’s a cat behaviorist who has a show on Animal Planet called My Cat from Hell. I had thought about becoming a cat behaviorist in the 90’s, but there wasn’t really a market for it back then. I would love to talk to him about what he does and how he got there.

If you were stranded on a deserted island for the rest of forever, which musical artist would you be listening to, and which television series would you be watching? Black Sabbath (with Ozzy only)—I never get tired of listening to their music. For a tv show, I have so many favorites, but I think I’d have to go with Law and Order, mainly because it was on for so many years it would take a really long time to watch all of the episodes before having to start back at the beginning.

The Jets Related Questions:

How did you become a Jets fan? My grandmother, who was British and came to the states with my grandfather after WWII, loved American football and the Jets. They had settled in Whitestone and attended Jets games regularly when they played in Shea Stadium. So I guess you could say I’ve been a fan since before I was born.

Side story: One night in the early 70’s, one of my aunts, who was still living with my grandparents at the time, met Joe Namath at a nightclub in Manhattan. She wasn’t a football fan but knew who he was (I mean, who didn’t back then?). He drove her home, and my grandmother was seriously pissed that she didn’t invite him in!

What’s your favorite Jets memory? What about your most painful Jets memory? The Monday Night Miracle was great, but I would have to say my favorite memory was when the Jets beat the Patriots in the playoffs, in Foxboro, in 2011. I watched NFL Total Access for hours after that game just to hear the talking heads talk over and over about how the Jets stunned everyone with that win.

My most painful memory would have to be the year the Jets lost to the Broncos in the AFC title game in 1999. My then-husband and I had been living in Denver for 2 years at this point, and found a local bar that had the entire back room set aside for Jets fans. Up 10-0 at halftime, we ended up losing 23-10, and we had to leave the bar through all of the Broncos fans. It was humiliating. The Broncos went on to win the SB that year. Almost equally painful would be the Thursday night game in Denver, when Tebow was Denver’s QB. Once again, we were winning, and ended up blowing it in the 4th quarter. I was actually at that game and the Broncos fans were NOT nice after their win.

In your humble opinion, who is the most dominant Jet to ever play and why? Mark Gastineau. He was the anchor of the New York Sack Exchange. One of my favorite Jets players. I was so bummed when he quit before his time.

Who is your favorite Jets player and why? Darrelle Revis (before the trade). I loved watching him shut out opposing WR’s every week. I was seriously pissed when Idzik traded him.

If Woody Johnson handed you a blank check and gave you a choice to be a part of the New York Jets organization in any capacity, which position would you choose, and why? (It could be GM, Head Coach, Quarterback, Linebacker, Head of Scouting, Waterboy—the sky is the limit). I don’t know what this position would be called, but I would want to be the person who decides how the money is spent. I know normally the GM decides this, but Mac has spent too much money on too many mediocre players, so I would take that responsibility away from him and make those decisions myself.

Mike Maccagnan gets fired after the season and Woody Johnson decides to name you the next GM, giving you one very clear goal: win the Super Bowl within the next 4 years. What is your strategy to make the Jets a Super Bowl winner? What is your strategy to build this team into a perennial Super Bowl contender? Well it’s no secret around here that I’m not into scouting players, so my first move would be to go out and find the best scout in the business. His (or her) first order of business would be to build a top-notch OL to protect Sam. Even a less-than-mediocre QB like Sanchez made it to the title game twice because he had a top-notch OL. Then, I would find an OC who has the flexibility to create an offensive scheme that plays to Sam’s strengths, rather than one who tries to cram the QB into their own scheme. Also, I would hire Revis as our Cornerbacks coach so he can teach our CB’s how to play press coverage. And of course, along the way I would be adding the best WR’s I can find.
