Will the New York Giants make a splash next week and trade for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen?
Oddsmakers say there is a 7-to-1 chance that could happen.
The groundswell of Kyler Murray becoming the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft has grown dramatically over the past week. BetOnline has listed those odds at 1-to-2, meaning there’s a high chance that Arizona will select Murray first.
That means they will be trading their current starter in Rosen to the highest bidder and that price may not be as high as one would think. Rosen was the Cardinals first-round pick in 2018 and started 13 games compiling a 3-10 record as a rookie.
The trade market may not be as hot for Rosen as the Cardinals may think. Some believe that they will get no more than a third-round pick in return for the former UCLA star. That could heat the market up a bit but which teams could be interested?
BetOnline lists the Washington Redskins as the favorites to land Rosen at 3-to-1. The Skins are traditionally are not immune to making trades. Last year, they traded for Alex Smith only to have his season ended by an ugly leg injury that has put his career in jeopardy. The Redskins also have two third-round picks this season, so they are a fit.
The Miami Dolphins are 5-to-1 although beat reporter Omar Kelly has tweeted the Fins have “no interest” in trading for Rosen. His take is they will draft a quarterback with the 13th overall pick.
The Giants have been listed at 7-to-1. They do not have a lot of draft capital to play around with. They own the sixth and the 37th overall selections but have no pick in the third round. It remains to be seen if they even have any interest in Rosen at this time. They may feel that a second round pick is too steep a price to pay or may just stand pat and grab a rookie in this draft.
The Giants scouted the 2018 quarterback class heavily before deciding on taking Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick after the Cleveland Browns selected Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield No. 1.
The next two quarterbacks taken were Sam Darnold of USC (No. 3 to the Jets) and Josh Allen of Wyoming (by Buffalo at No. 7).
Rosen was selected 10th overall by the Cardinals, who traded the No. 15 pick, a 3rd-round pick (No. 79) and a fifth-round selection (No. 152) to the Oakland Raiders for the right to take him.
The Giants apparently liked Rosen and he was high on their list but could not pass on Barkley. Rosen showed some prowess as a rookie last year in a very trying situation. The Cardinals were terrible and he was basically thrown to the wolves. The consensus is he will fare much better in another setting.
The Giants could easily trade for Rosen by offering several third-day selections. The Giants have eight picks from rounds four through seven, but that may not be enough to get it done, especially if the other teams are offering third rounders.
