Two short years away from a potential work stoppage, Jason La Canfora provided updates on latest CBS conversations.
With everything going on in the world of the National Football League it’s easy for people to forget we are just two years away from the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the league and the player’s association expiring.
There are going to be several topics brought up during the next round of negotiations. Things like guaranteed money in contracts, tag usage, medical futures and retirement benefits, among many other topics.
Among all of the measuring and interviewing going on at the NFL Scouting Combine last week into this past weekend, CBS’ Jason La Canfora found time to talk about the next CBA with some people, and came away with some confidence, writing,
“...call me crazy, I came away thinking common sense might prevail with this 10-year CBA now drawing closer to its conclusion.”
In his writing, La Canfora mentions one league source telling him there was a possibility a new CBA could be agreed on prior to the 2020 season, which would be amazing. A miracle even.
One interesting area his source mentioned some give-and-take possibly occurring involved the current league marijuana policy.
Players such as Josh Gordon have been suspended multiple times and even banned due to marijuana violations while some players have been able to play consistently even after having been party to violence while under contract with an NFL franchise.
La Canfora concluded his article hopeful even more progress ahead of the current CBA expiration might come out of this month’s owner’s meetings.
It’s encouraging - to me at least - the two sides are currently confident they can get a new deal done in time to prevent a work stoppage.
With new league’s like the Alliance of American Football (AAF) already started, and the XFL starting next year, the NFL can certainly find themselves doing more damage than good by suffering through a strike or lockout.
Here’s hoping this is the first of a long string of good news pertaining to the CBA, but like La Canfora and his sources also understand, we’re a long way from good and there are certainly going to be some tense moments along the way.
