Josh Bellamy to sign 2 year, (up to) $7 million free contract with the Jets in free agency

In a fairly surprising development, the Jets are signing wide receiver and special teamer Josh Bellamy. The soon-to-be 30 year old Bellamy is getting a strikingly large contract given his modest resume in the NFL.

That’s a ton of money for a guy who will be 30 and has 76 career receptions.

What’s the rationale?

No, that’s not it. That “breakout” campaign saw Bellamy post 19 catches for 224 yards.

He does come with a reputation for being a solid special teamer, but even then it’s tough to justify that deal. The good teams in this league develop turn cheap young players with upside at their natural positions into quality special teamers. The Jets have spoken extensively about how much they like special teams coach Brant Boyer. If they’re so high on him, they should trust him to develop performers in the third phase of the game.

Every year around this time it feels like Mike Maccagnan gives out a totally inexplicable contract or two in free agency. This is the 2019 vintage,
