The Chiefs running back is due to become an unrestricted free agent in the coming weeks.
CBS Sports NFL analyst Jason La Canfora expects an NFL team to hit a “home run” with Kansas City Chiefs unrestricted free agent-to-be Spencer Ware, as he explains in his latest notes. Ware is due to become a UFA when the league year begins on March 13.
LA CANFORA: Someone is going to hit a home run with Spencer Ware. He is being overlooked by the media, but is dynamic with the ball in his hands and catches everything thrown to him. His market will out-price the Chiefs.
Ware, 27, began 2018 as the Chiefs backup running back behind Kareem Hunt but became the Chiefs starter when the team released Hunt in late November. Ware recorded 122 yards on 29 carries and scored one touchdown over two games before injuring his hamstring, which kept him sidelined until the Chiefs’ AFC title game.
Damien Williams performed well in Ware’s absence, and the Chiefs signing Williams to a two-year contract extension in late December probably sealed Ware’s fate when it came to 2019. Williams is 26.
Darrel Williams is the only other running back currently on the Chiefs roster, and some expect the Chiefs to draft another one early on in the upcoming NFL Draft.
McShay says he thinks the Chiefs will address the secondary in two of the first three picks, but could use the third to pick up a RB because the position could use more depth. Says he doesn't think the Chiefs have 'the' guy at RB right now.

The Chiefs were linked to several different running backs at last week’s NFL Scouting Combine.
Ware, who joined the Chiefs active roster off their practice squad in 2015, had his best season in 2016 when he recorded 921 yards on 214 rushes, 447 yards on 33 catches and five total touchdowns. He missed the 2017 season thanks to PCL and LCL injuries.
La Canfora also offered a quick note on Chiefs safety Eric Berry.
LA CANFORA: At this point I would be very surprised if the Chiefs moved on from Eric Berry. They haven’t given any indications to that end, and the cap hit it would require after waiting for him to finally get healthy again on a team that is Super Bowl Now mode wouldn’t make much sense (also, at a time with prices soaring on a loaded safety market).
