NFL increases the salary cap by $11 million for 2019

That’s a lot of money!

The NFL’s salary cap for 2019 is officially $188.2 million, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. This is an $11 million increase over last year.

The New England Patriots are projected to have roughly $17 million in cap space at this point in time, although that is subject to change. New England has not approached Dont’a Hightower or Devin McCourty for a contract restructure, which could free up additional cap space, but there are plenty of ways for the team to increase their access to cap space.

The Patriots need to find enough money to re-sign key players like DL Trey Flowers, K Stephen Gostkowski, P Ryan Allen, and CB Jonathan Jones. They also will have interest in retaining CB Jason McCourty, DT Malcom Brown, WR Phillip Dorsett, WR Chris Hogan, and WR Cordarrelle Patterson.

The increase in cap space certainly helps the Patriots, but there’s still plenty of work to do.
