Free agency is kind of sort of done with. Here’s where each NFL team stands as time progresses towards the 2019 NFL Draft.
Traditional power rankings suck, dude. They overreact to one HUGE signing and one sad! departure. Rarely do they take in account the entire offseason, or even the resources each team currently has. To give a more accurate representation of what’s going on and where these teams currently stand, I will not equivocate or give into the yank of heartstrings the NFL offseason brings.
Instead, here’s where all 32 teams rank when taking account their 2019 offseason, and the resources they have available.
32.) Miami Dolphins—Record: 7-9. Point Differential: -114 (30). DVOA: -16.5% (27). Previously 25th.
Departures: Andre Branch (DE), Ted Larsen (LG), Danny Amendola (WR), Josh Sitton (LG), Ryan Tannehill (QB), Ja’Wuan James (OT), Cameron Wake (EDGE), Brandon Bolden (RB), Frank Gore (RB).
Additions: Dwayne Allen (TE), Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB), Clive Walford (TE), Eric Rowe (CB), Chris Reed (OG).
Cap Space: $28,998,715
Draft Picks: 1 (13), 2 (48), 3 (78), 4 (116), 5 (151), 7 (233, 234).
If it wasn’t official, signing Ryan Fitzpatrick to start at quarterback this season dried the blood, and confirmed that the Dolphins aren’t having anything to do with 2019. The blah team that won games by beating bad teams by one score finally decided to start over again. They traded Ryan Tannehill. They let their expensive veterans go bye-bye. They’re going to trade Robert Quinn for like a fourth round pick. They didn’t add much of anything at all.
Miami currently has $99 million in cap space entering 2020. They’ll have to decide if they want to resign Xavien Howard or Laremy Tunsil, but that’s it. This is a canvas, a sheet of paper without the lines.
31.) Cincinnati Bengals—Record: 6-10. Point Differential: -87 (26). DVOA: -9.7% (23). Previously 26th.
Departures: Marvin Lewis (HC), Bill Lazor (OC), Vontaze Burfict (LB), Jake Fisher (TE), Cedric Ogbuhei (OT).
Additions: Zac Taylor (HC), Brian Callahan (OC), Lou Anarumo (DC), B.W. Webb (CB), John Miller (RG), Darqueze Denard (CB).
Cap Space: $27,871,964
Draft Picks: 1 (11), 2 (42), 3 (72), 4 (110), 5 (149), 6 (183, 198, 210, 211, 213), 7 (223).
The Bengals are a crappy team who didn’t do anything to get better. Typically this means that next season they’ll once again be a crappy team. Their linebacker core is one of the league’s worst, there’s not much to like on their offensive line, and their quarterback is Andy Dalton, who needs plenty of time. I could see them trading A.J. Green, moving on from Dalton next season, and zipping into a new stretch of skin.
30.) Washington Redskins—Record: 7-9. Point Differential: -78 (25). DVOA: -18.6% (29). Previously 23rd.
Departures: Preston Smith (OLB), Ty Nsekhe (OT), HaHa Clinton-Dix (S), Maurice Harris (WR).
Additions: Case Keenum (QB), Landon Collins (S), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (CB), Ereck Flowers (OT).
Cap Space: $12,701,240
Draft Picks: 1 (15), 2 (46), 3 (76, 96), 5 (153, 173), 6 (206), 7 (227, 253).
Aside from Kirk Cousins, Washington destroys quarterbacks. Robert Griffin III hobbled around the soupy lithosphere like a shotgun blasted deer wobbling toward the light in the NFL Divisional Round. Alex Smith’s leg shattered. Colt McCoy lasted one game as his replacement. Enter the dragon Case KEEENUUUM. This is the worst situation for him to be in. This franchise’s legacy, plus his career of taking self-mutilating sacks is horrifying. I can’t watch, but I can’t look away.
KEENUUUM isn’t the answer here. They don’t have the downfield passing options he needs, and even last year, his deep passing regressed and his interception rate went up. They still don’t have a backup quarterback. Washington’s defense was over inflated by turnovers. It’s not a defense that was Landon Collins away. 30th is probably unfair. They’ll win like 6 games. I’m just overemotional.
29.) New York Giants—Record: 5-11. Point Differential: -43 (22). DVOA: 0.0.% (16). Previously 22nd.
Departures: Connor Barwin (EDGE), Johnathan Stewart (RB), Olivier Vernon (EDGE), Odell Beckham Jr. (WR), Landon Collins (S), Jamon Brown (OG), B.W. Webb (CB), Mario Edwards (DT), Josh Mauro (DT), Kerry Wynn (DT).
Additions: Kevin Zeitler (OG), Jabril Peppers (S), Antoine Bethea (S), Golden Tate (WR), Markus Golden (EDGE), Olsen Pierre (DT).
Cap Space: $12,587,504
Draft Picks: 1 (6, 17), 2 (37), 3 (95), 4 (108, 132), 5 (142, 143, 171), 6 (180), 7 (232, 245).
t was funny imagining Eli Manning starting another year here next year, and now that it’s happening, it’s hilarious. He’s going to throw so many drag routes for seven yards while an exacberated Saquon Barkley carries ten defenders for three yards. By next season this should be a nice situation for future young quarterback ??? to play in.
I do think They have plenty of picks. They’ll have plenty of cap space next season. They have to draft a quarterback this year, or next year. I do think Dave Gettlemen has a plan. The plan involves being terrible this year.
28.) Detroit Lions—Record: 6-10. Point Differential: -36 (21). DVOA: -15.2% (28). Previously 27th.
Departures: Jim Bob Cooter (OC), Glover Quin (S), Bruce Ellington (WR), T.J. Lang (OG), Nevin Lawson (CB), Kerry Hyder (DT).
Additions: Darren Bevell (OC), Trey Flowers (DE), Justin Coleman (CB), Jesse James (TE), Danny Amendola (WR), Oday Aboushi (OG), Andrew Adams (S), Tommylee Lewis (WR), Logan Thomas (TE), Rashaan Melvin (CB).
Cap Space: $29,026,164
Draft Picks: 1 (8), 2 (43), 3 (88), 4 (111), 5 (146), 6 (184, 204), 7 (224, 229).
The Lions spent a ton of money this offseason to just be bad again. This team is a cave full of Zubats. Now that Joe Flacco has been traded and all his bonus money has hit, Matthew Stafford now has the worst contrat out there. Congratulations.
27.) Buffalo Bills—Record: 6-10. Point Differential: -105 (28). DVOA: -18.4% (28). Previously 28th.
Departures: John Miller (OG), Charles Clay (TE), Logan Thomas (TE), Kyle Williams (DT).
Additions: Spencer Long (G/C), Frank Gore (RB), Kevin Johnson (DB), Tyler Kroft (TE), Mitch Morse (C), Ty Nsekhe (OT), Cole Beasley (WR), John Brown (WR), Jon Feliciano (OG), Andre Roberts (WR), LaAdrian Waddle (OT), Maurice Alexander (S), Jake Fisher (TE).
Cap Space: $32,984,486
Draft Picks: 1 (9), 2 (40), 3 (74), 4 (112, 131), 5 (147, 158), 6 (181), 7 (225, 228).
You have to give the Bills credit. They know what they want to be. Buffalo is going to keep playing that same Carolina 4-3/Nickle and get pressure with their front four, power run, and use Josh Allen’s athleticism. LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore are 65 years old together. They have to be the oldest combined backfield in the history of the game. Buffalo will have an enormous offensive line too with Morse, Nsekhe, and Waddle. The Bills could be an eight win team that finishes second in the AFC East and gives the Patriots zero trouble whatsoever if Josh Allen stops leaving so many first downs on the back porch because of innacurate throws
26.) Oakland Raiders—Record: 4-12. Point Differential: -177 (31). DVOA: -21.0% (31). Previously 31st.
Departures: Kelechi Osemele (OG), Jordy Nelson (WR), A.J. McCarron (QB), Donald Penn (OT), Jon Feliciano (OG).
Additions: Mike Mayock (GM), Denzelle Good (OT), Antonio Brown (WR), Trent Brown (OT), Lamarcus Joyner (S), Tyrell Williams (WR), J.J. Nelson (WR), Vontaze Burfict (LB), Jordan Devy (OG), Nevin Lawson (CB), Curtis Riley (S), Mike Glennon (QB).
Cap Space: $33,409,805
Draft Picks: 1 (4, 24, 27), 2 (35), 4 (106), 5 (140), 7 (218, 235).
If their offensive line works out they should score points. Derek Carr has shown the ability to be a good quarterback when he can play backyard five M-I-S-S-I-P-P-I football. Brown at left tackle, whoever plays left guard, bounce back seasons from Rodney Hudson and Gabe Jackson, and Kolton Miller fixing his hands is the idea here. If this idea is a competent reality they’ll be enjoyable when they have the ball. It’s unreal they were able to get Brown for what they got him for, and teams like Indy should be ashamed they didn’t make the same sort of deal.
This defense, once again, is going to be repuslive. They had 13 sacks last year. There’s zero pass rushing again. Mayock is praying that one of the top three teams takes a quarterback so they can end up with either Josh Allen, Quinnen Williams, or Nick Bosa. The cornerbacks are bad, the secondary is worse.
25.) Arizona Cardinals—Record: 3-13. Point Differential: -200 (32). DVOA: -40.4% (32). Previously 32nd.
Departures: Steve Wilks (HC), Byron Leftwhich (QB), Al Holcomb (DC), Mike Glennon (QB), Antoine Bethea (S), Jermaine Gresham (TE), Mike Iupati (OG), Markus Golden (EDGE), Deone Bucannon (LB), J.J. Nelson (WR), Oday Aboushi (OG), Olson Pierre (DT).
Additions: Kliff Kingsbury (HC), Vance Joseph (DC), Tanner Vallejo (LB), Robert Alford (DB), Brooks Reed (DE), Charles Clay (TE), Marcus Gilbert (OT), Jordan Hicks (LB), J.R. Sweezy (LG), Brett Hundley (QB), Max Garcia (OG), Kevin White (WR), Josh Shaw (DB), Darius Philon (DT), Terrell Suggs (OLB).
Cap Space: $26,534,648
Draft Picks: 1 (10), 2 (33), 3 (65), 4 (103, 139), 6 (174, 179), 7 (248, 249, 254).
Arizona had a top ten defense last season, and all-time awful offense. They scored 15 points a game. This offseason they’ve improved their offensive line. Maybe Josh Rosen could actually have a chance to play quarterback here if he stays. I like enough of what they did on offense to think it could be the 20th best offense in football, and the defense improved enough to swat away regression. Suggs is perfect here. Someone send him a copy of Desert Solitaire.
24.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers—Record: 5-11. Point Differential: -68 (23). DVOA: -13.0% (25). Previously 24th.
Departures: Dirk Koetter (HC), Todd Monken (OC), Mark Duffner (DC), Vinny Curry (DE), Desean Jackson (WR), Bryan Anger (P), Mitch Unrein (DT), Adam Humphries (WR), Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB), Adarius Taylor (LB), Andrew Adams (S), Josh Shaw (S), Kwon Alexander (LB).
Additions: Bruce Arians (HC), Byron Leftwich (OC), Todd Bowels (DC), Deone Bucannon (LB), Bradley Pinion (P), Breshard Perriman (WR), Shaq Barrett (EDGE), Earl Watford (OG), Kentrell Brice (S).
Cap Space: $3,215,447
Draft Picks: 1 (5), 2 (39), 3 (70), 4 (107), 5 (145), 6 (208), 7 (215).
I admit. I love the Arians hire. Jameis Winston can throw the ball downfield. He’s perfect in a vertical offense. Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, O.J. Howard, and Cameron Brate, is a great group of targets as well. The defensive signings were nice low buy options, but they need more talent here. If Winston can make something of himself, they could be like the 2018 Atlanta Falcons.
23.) New York Jets—Record: 4-12. Point Differential: -108 (29). DVOA: -14.8% (25). Previously 29th.
Departures: Todd Bowles (HC), Jeremy Bates (OC), Kacy Rodgers (DC), Spencer Long (G/C), Terrence Brooks (S), Kevin Pierre-Louis (LB), Mike Pennel (DT), Isaiah Crowell (RB), James Carpenter (OG), Buster Skrine (CB), Andre Roberts (WR), Terrence Brooks (S), Clive Walford (TE).
Additions: Adam Gase (HC), Dowell Loggains (OC), Gregg Williams (DC), Kelechi Osemele (OG), Jamison Crowder (WR), Josh Bellamy (WR), Le’Veon Bell (RB), C.J. Mosely (LB), Brian Poole (CB), Chandler Castonzo (K), Daniel Brown (TE), Tom Compton (OG/OT), Trevor Siemian (QB).
Cap Space: $32,186,564
Draft Picks: 1 (3), 3 (68, 93), 4 (105), 6 (196), 7 (217).
The problem with the Jets over the years is they invest everything into a the defense only for it to be the 15th best in football. With Mosely, Poole, and growth from their current young guys, this may finally be the year they get past that wall in their brain. Whenever I close my eyes I see Bell jogging in place while waiting for Osemele to add bones to his necklace. I also saw enough from Sam Darnold last season to be excited for his future. He’ll just need to lower his interception rate.
22.) Denver Broncos—Record: 6-10. Point Differential: -20 (18). DVOA: 6.6% (13). Previously 17th.
Departures: Vance Joseph (HC), Bill Musgrave (OC), Joe Woods (DC), Andrew Holmes (WR), Darian Stewart (S), Case Keenum (QB), Brandon Marshall (LB), Matt Paradis (C), Billy Turner (OG), Bradley Roby (CB), Shaquil Barrett (EDGE), Matt LaCosse (TE), Mac Garcia (OG).
Additions: Vic Fangio (HC), Rich Scangarello (OC), Ed Donatell (DC), Joe Flacco (WR), Ja’Wuan James (OT), Kareem Jackson (DB), Bryce Callahan (CB).
Cap Space: $12,544,918
Draft Picks: 1 (10), 2 (41), 3 (71), 4 (125), 5 (148, 156), 6 (182), 7 (237).
We are past the point where we can say Joe Flacco needs to be in an offense that does ‘X’ to have success. He’s just bad at playing football. There isn’t an offense for him to be play in. The only good thing about him is he’s tall, which makes him a perfect John Elway quarterback. Additionally, they lost the interior of their offensive line, Phillip Lindsey is expected to miss OTAs already, and it already looks like their #1 rushing offense is going to drop off. At least they have the best edge rushing combo in football.
21.) Tennessee Titans—Record: 9-7. Point Differential: +7 (15). DVOA: -4.9% (20). Previously 20th.
Departures: Brian Orakpo (EDGE), Austin Davis (QB), Blaine Gabbert (QB), Johnathan Cyprien (S), Josh Kline (OG), Luke Stocker (TE).
Additions: Arthur Smith (OC), Adam Humphries (WR), Rodger Saffold (OG), Cameron Wake (EDGE), Ryan Tannehill (QB).
Cap Space: $27,603,986
Draft Picks: 1 (19), 2 (51), 3 (82), 4 (121), 5 (157), 6 (188).
The Titans were mediocre at everything last season. To improve they added Wake, a 37 year old pass rusher on a 3-year contract, Saffold, an exquisite outside zone blocking left guard, Humphries, the perfect slot receiver to catch play action slants from Marcus Mariota. I don’t think Wake is the answer to their pass rushing woes, but him and Harold Landry will be better than the nothing they got from Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan. Yet, I don’t think it’s enough to save their secondary.
There’s no better quarterback room in the league. Two players who will be tantalizing prospects until they are 37 years old. Both will probably play eight games this year, or both could even end up injured, and Jon Robinson will have to call up Blaine Gabbert and ask if he’s free this weekend. The Titans are pretty much a college team with two freshmen quarterbacks who take turns on each series.
Aside from Wake, I liked their signings. Each one made them better, but they were scattered. Tennesssee still isn’t good at any one thing. This season is going to depend on Mariota finally having that great healthy season.
20.) Atlanta Falcons—Record: 7-9. Point Differential: -9 (17). DVOA: -3.0% (17). Previously 19th.
Departures: Steve Sarkisian (OC), Marquand Manuel (DC), Robert Alford (CB), Matt Bryant (K), Brooks Reed (EDGE), Ryan Schraeder (OT), Tevin Coleman (RB), Bruce Irvin (EDGE), Justin Bethel (CB), Brian Poole (CB), Marvin Hall (WR).
Additions: Dirk Koetter (OC), Jamon Brown (OG), James Carpenter (OG), Luke Stocker (TE), Kenjon Barner (RB).
Cap Space: $4,698,306
Draft Picks: 1 (14), 2 (45), 3 (79), 4 (117, 137), 5 (152, 172), 6 (186), 7 (230).
Their defense is always fascinating to me. It’s post-modern. A focus on athletes and versatility. Every season it’s seeping and injured. Someone teach Vic Beasley an inside move already.
19.) San Francisco 49ers—Record: 4-12. Point Differential: -93 (27). DVOA: -20.3% (30). Previously 30th.
Departures: Earl Mitchell (DT), Gary Gilliam (OT), Pierre Garcon (WR), Bradley Pinion (P).
Additions: Kwon Alexander (LB), Dee Ford (OLB), Tevin Coleman (RB), Jordan Matthews (WR), David Mayo (LB), Jason Verrett (CB).
Cap Space: $38,667,204
Draft Picks: 1 (2), 2 (36), 3 (67), 4 (104), 6 (176, 212).
The 49ers were one of the unluckiest teams in the league from am injury, one-possesion record, turnover differential perspective. Jimmy Garoppolo should be beyond acceptable. Kyle Shanahhan can turn anyone into a quarterback. Their horrendous defense added two plus linebackers, and has the ability to add a head from the hydra of pass rushers this rookie class offers. Better luck and defensive improvement should see them competing for a playoff spot in 2019.
18.) Minnesota Vikings—Record: 8-7-1. Point Differential: +19 (T-12). DVOA: 8.1% (10). Previously 14th.
Departures: Mike Remmers (OG), Andrew Sendejo (S), Sheldon Richardson (DT), Nick Easton (C), Latavius Murray (RB), Trevor Siemian (QB), Tom Compton (OG), George Iloka (S), Marcus Sherels (CB).
Additions: Kevin Stefaniski (OC), Shamar Stephen (OG), Josh Klike (OG).
Cap Space: $5,181,531
Draft Picks: 1 (18), 2 (50), 3 (81), 4 (120), 6 (190, 209), 7 (247, 250).
Kirk Cousins has a cap hit of $29 million this year. That’s the only thing that matters. They couldn’t improve their roster because they are paying him this exorbitant amount. When a quarterback is paid that much he has to make his entire offense better. Cousins didn’t do this last season. He couldn’t deal with the pass rush. All he did was check down, and became too much of a coward to put the ball downfield.
17.) Carolina Panthers—Record: 7-9. Point Differential: -6 (16). DVOA: 0.5.% (14). Previously 16th.
Departures: Ryan Kalil (C), Julius Peppers (EDGE), Ben Jacobs (LB), Captain Munnerlyn (CB), Matt Kalil (OT), Thomas Davis (LB), Devin Funchess (WR), David Mayo (LB), Chandler Catanzaro (K), Kenjon Barner (RB).
Additions: Matt Paradis (C), Bruce Irvin (EDGE).
Cap Space: $3,852,948
Draft Picks: 1 (16), 2 (47), 3 (77, 100), 4 (115), 5 (154), 6 (187).
Carolina was going to be a Wildcard team until Newton’s inability to throw the ball over his head ruined their season. This is the best collection of offensive talent he’s had. The defense wasn’t able to really add pass rushing talent, it will be interesting to see if Irvin brings it every down, but even if they can’t get to the quarterback again, this offense will be ridiculous enough to win on their own if Newton is healthy. Someone teach him to sleep on his belly.
