Raiders part ways with longtime OT Donald Penn

In a move many expected, this afternoon the Raiders announced that OT Donald Penn is no longer part of the team.

The move is not a surprise, with the Raiders drafting tackle Kolton Miller in 2018 and signing tackle Trent Brown to the largest contract ever given to an offensive tackle just last week. But now it’s official. Raiders owner Mark Davis put out the following statement:

For his part, Penn put this statement out, thanking and honoring the Raiders but insisting he isn’t done with his playing days just yet.

Penn initially came to the Raiders in 2014 as a free agent after several years with the Buccaneers. He was a stalwart at left tackle for four seasons, and was a key cog in the 2016 Raiders line that was one of the best in the league and helped take Oakland to the playoffs. Penn was moved to right tackle last season and got injured in Week 4, spending the remainder of the season out.

The move does save $5.5M in cap room for the Raiders, but leaves them pretty thin in tackle depth behind presumed starters Miller and Brown. Look for them to address the position in the upcoming Draft.
