Ravens cut S Eric Weddle

The Ravens part ways with the veteran safety

In slightly surprising news, the Baltimore Ravens have decided to part ways with veteran safety Eric Weddle.

Eric Weddle signed a four-year/$26 million deal back in 2016. After three years, the team cut the veteran.

This cut clears $7.5 million in cap space. An enormous amount for a team who has been tight-roping the salary cap for years now.

During his time in Baltimore, Weddle was a great leader. He was a recruiter and also a playmaker. In his three seasons with Baltimore, Weddle posted 10 interceptions, 24 passes defended, three forced fumbles and 220 combined tackles. Unfortunately, the last season wasn’t nearly as impressive compared to the first two years. He did not create a takeaway in 2018.

Eric Weddle

Weddle is a savvy veteran. However, he is no longer a dominant safety worth $8.25 million. The team saves nearly 80% of his cap number by parting ways, which is hard to argue against. The Ravens can use these savings to sign players on other areas of defense or add a younger free safety to pair with Tony Jefferson, Chuck Clark or DeShon Elliott.”

Weddle will be missed by the players, coaches and fans. Ultimately, though, his price-tag outweighed his production.
