Ravens expected to give DT Michael Pierce a second-round tender

The Ravens continue to waste no time in attempting to retain their own free agents

A day after they placed a second-round tender on restricted free agent linebacker Patrick Onwuasor, the Ravens are taking the same action with defensive tackle Michael Pierce, whose also a RFA.

Pierce is set to make just north of $3 million this upcoming season. Given his production and consistency over the past few seasons, this price tag is a fairly significant bargain. Pierce has developed into a dominant run-stuffing force and one of the most impactful interior defensive lineman in the league.

This past season, Pierce received a 91.0 grade from Pro Football Focus, which ranked 5th among all players at the position. Few could have foreseen this ascendance from the former undrafted free agent but he’s quickly become one of the most important players on Baltimore’s roster.

Losing Pierce would be a significant blow to the Ravens defense, especially after losing Eric Weddle and with the impending free agencies of three impact players near the line of scrimmage: Terrell Suggs, Za’Darius Smith, and C.J. Mosley.

Because Pierce is restricted free agent, the Ravens can match any offer sheet that another team extends to him. As is the case with Onwuasor, should Baltimore decline to match an offer from another team, they would receive a second-round draft pick as compensation for losing Pierce.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see both Onwuasor and Pierce receive offers from other teams but the Ravens would almost certainly match them. While second-round picks are valuable, it’s unlikely Baltimore would find a player as talented and dominant as Michael Pierce.
