Report: Cowboys “not close” with DeMarcus Lawrence, deal not expected by March 5th

The two sides have more work to do in reaching a deal for DeMarcus Lawrence.

The contractual status of DeMarcus Lawrence is perhaps the most important thing that the Dallas Cowboys have to figure out this offseason.

Earlier this week we learned that the Dallas brain trust made their first offer to Lawrence, and a few days later it seems like that was not enough. According to a report from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys and Lawrence are “not close.”

March 5th is an important date because it’s the deadline for when teams can franchise tag players should they choose to do so. Tank played on the tag last season, and performed well obviously, and has made it clear that he does not want to do that again. What’s most important about it at this point though is that it would buy Dallas time to continue working on a long-term deal, keeping Lawrence away from other NFL teams.

It does seem like a franchise tag is in the near future. Tuesday will be interesting.
