Report: Detroit Lions not tendering DE Kerry Hyder

It looks like the Lions are moving on from Kerry Hyder.

As the Detroit Lions try to figure out what they plan on doing at the edge defender position—especially in light of three four defensive ends receiving the franchise tag this week—it has become clear that one player will not be a primary part of their plans.

On Monday afternoon, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Lions will not be tendering Kerry Hyder Jr. a restricted free agency deal:

Hyder was one of two restricted free agents the Lions had. The other, Romeo Okwara, agreed to a two-year deal with the Lions already. Once that happened, the writing was pretty much on the wall for Hyder, who only played in a total of 153 snaps in 2018, despite the injury to Ezekiel Ansah.

Although Hyder could theoretically come back, it appears he’s now headed for unrestricted free agency when the new league year starts on March 13. It’s a disappointing end to Hyder’s career in Detroit, after the defensive end continually fought against the odds to make an impact with Detroit. In 2016, Hyder fought his way onto the roster and even notched 8.0 sacks.

However, after tearing his achilles in the 2017 preseason and due to the Lions undergoing a complete defensive scheme change, it was time for both sides to move on. Hyder will have to continue his underdog story elsewhere, and we wish Hyder the best and hope that he can thrive elsewhere.
