Report: Falcons hire Miami University’s Jess Simpson as defensive line coach

Bryant Young’s short time with the Falcons may be at an end.

Just when things start settling down for the Falcons the team reportedly makes a coaching change. The move itself should not be too surprising. Bryant Young came in with his Hall of Fame pedigree but the former player failed to get much progress out of the defensive line. We expected Bryant to get fired this offseason after underwhelming seasons from Vic Beasley and Takkarist McKinley. Neither top player developed and neither looked particularly well coached.

Now he’s likely gone as his replacement has reportedly been hired.

Simpson was previously with the Falcons as a defensive assistant. Here’s what we had to say about Simpson on his first stint with the team.

Simpson, like Quinn, has an impeccable bald head. He’s also navigated a unique trajectory on his way to a NFL coaching gig. Just three months ago, Simpson was head coach at Buford High School. If you don’t follow high school football closely, then you may not be familiar with Buford, but it’s an absolute powerhouse. Quinn also recruited a couple former Buford players during his tenure at the University of Florida. Simpson left Buford in December and briefly coached at Georgia State.

Since that time, Simpson coached the Miami defensive line under former UGA head coach Mark Richt. It looks like a step up from Young who appeared to be out of coaching the five years before getting the job with Quinn, and only had three years of defensive line coaching experience in college. Simpson has more success but obviously his pro experience is limited to his prior time with the Falcons.

Quinn desperately needs the defensive line to transform this season if he expects to keep his job into 2020. Simpson has a lot of work to do to get Beasley and McKinley up to speed.

Update: the team has confirmed Young is no longer with the team. If the reason is true it explains why the move is happening so much later than other coaching changes.

The Atlanta Falcons have hired Jess Simpson as their new defensive line coach after Bryant Young announced he was stepping down from the role to spend more time with his family. “We fully support and respect coach Young in this transition as it’s the right decision for him and his family,” coach Dan Quinn said.
