Could he be traded before the start of the new league year?
With the eyes of the National Football League focused on the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week, there are rumors flying fast and furious. One, from Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports, is going to be of particular interest to fans of the Minnesota Vikings.
(A brief aside on other players available ahead of the league year. League sources said the Vikings are shopping corner Trae Waynes, the Bears are shopping running back Jordan Howard, the Chiefs are talking trade on Justin Houston and the Eagles are open to moving Nelson Agholor).
In line with some of the speculation that we’ve been hearing over the course of the past few weeks, it appears that the Vikings. . .at least according to LaCanfora. . .are looking to potentially trade cornerback Trae Waynes before the new league year starts on 13 March.
The Vikings have some pretty significant depth at the cornerback spot, and with the price tag for Xavier Rhodes likely being something that would keep potential trade partners away, it appears that Waynes could end up being the odd man out.
The 11th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Michigan State, Waynes is now entering the fifth-year option season of his rookie contract. That deal is set to pay him just a shade over $9 million, and will become fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster on the first day of the league year.
With the Vikings looking for ways to create cap space for themselves, moving $9 million off the cap for a draft choice (or even a less expensive player) would appear to be a decent idea. Of course, as we saw this past season with the constant brushes with death that Rhodes was having, you can never have too much depth at cornerback, but it appears that the Vikings would be comfortable with Mike Hughes, Mackensie Alexander, and Holton Hill as the rest of their cornerback depth chart.
We’ve got about two weeks before the new league year starts, folks. . .and, as a result, I’m sure we’re going to continue hearing more things like this.
