The Lions didn’t land the first tight end they showed interest in.
The Detroit Lions’ first foray into tight end free agency will reportedly go empty-handed. According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, former Patriots tight end Dwayne Allen told her he is signing with the Miami Dolphins.
Free Agent TE Dwayne Allen just text me, "I'm going to sign with the #Dolphins."

The Lions were reportedly one of four teams to have met with Allen after the Patriots released him earlier in the week, in a move that saved $7.3 million in cap space. New England was also interested in bringing back Allen on a reduced salary.
It’s unclear how serious of players the Lions were in Allen, as general manager Bob Quinn promised he’d be thorough in his search for a tight end this year.
“This is a position of need,” Quinn said back in February. “We know that.”
But you have to be at least a little concerned that the Lions may be experiencing deja vu. Last year, the Lions had just as pressing of a need at tight end, and though they were aggressive in free agency, they missed on some of the better talent out there in free agency.
“Back in March, we talked to basically every tight end on the free agent market and tried to get those guys here,” Quinn said. “Some we were close on and some we weren’t.”
Is this the beginning of another series of misses in free agency, or did the Lions never have serious interest in Allen? We’ll likely never know, but this is just the start of free agency. No need to worry quite yet. We’ll see where the team is by this time next month, well after the new league year starts.
