Terry Beckner Jr. Is Quick Powerful & Athletic Could The Redskins Help Him Get Out Of His Own Head?

Player Overview

It’s not often Missouri lands a 5-star recruit. They did when East St. Louis, Illinois native Terry Beckner Jr. committed to the program in 2015 on national signing day. As you might imagine Becker got a whole lot of offers from a lot of schools. A big part of the decision was tired to him wanting to stay close to home so he chose the Tigers over Ohio State and Auburn. Beckner Jr. got off to a hot start during his freshman year. He posted some impressive production that year for only playing in 9 games before it ended after tearing both his ACL and MCL. He looked to get back on track and continue that positive trend heading into his sophomore season unfortunately that season ended early as well when he tore his other ACL. The past two seasons have been injury free for Beckner Jr. and that is great news for his prospects heading into the combine. These last two seasons he has shown flashes of that raw athleticism, quickness, power, and big play ability that made him a 5-star recruit. Credited to his own admission it has been hard for Beckner Jr. to get back on track and overcome the mental aspect of those two injuries. You’ll see that in his film where he’ll flash and go hard and on the next series take it easy. Teams are going to have to figure out how much of that is fear and how much if that is consistency and effort. If Beckner Jr. can convince them that his potential still has barely been scratched he might have a shot to go on day 3 of the draft.

Strengths

• Good size, strength, quickness, and athleticism for the position.
• Becker wins by using his quickness along with his technique to work the inside shoulders of interior OL. Hand placement can be very good and his arm extension is a weapon playing the run and rushing the passer as he can chain a swim to it and get through blocks or maintain leverage and space when working to get to the ball. He has closing burst to the ball which helps him be so disruptive.
• When he gets home he can be really violent with his tackles. I think I know a DL coach or two who would love that. Plays with good instincts and decent read and react ability. It may not be that impressive on film but he also shows god ability to contain.
• Shows good power and lower body strength to collapse the pocket and make QBs uncomfortable.

Weaknesses

• 2 torn ACLs and possibly mentally skittish about them where he doesn’t put 100% effort into each play. Medicals will be huge.
• Related to the above the consistency is not there. He looks amazing on some series and on others he barely makes an impact.
• Doesn’t have the flexibility and agility to finish some of the great rushes he puts together. He can fly to the QB but can run right past him because he didn’t take the right angle.
• Can he hesitant at times when he’s peaking into the backfield to see where the ball carrier is going. It’s good to be aware but he’s gotta learn to chew gum and walk at the same time.

How He Would Fit On The Redskins

I had to watch Beckner’s tapes several times. In my first viewings I really didn’t catch the special plays he made because he does run hot and cold. I can see how (if everything with him clears medically) teams would be very excited to get him on their squad to further develop. If he improves his consistency by half and gets out of his head and learns a new counter, watch out. Of course it’s very easy for me to write that and very hard for Beckner Jr. to do. I can also see how teams would be risk adverse one or two more injuries and he wouldn’t be unlike Phil Taylor. I’m not sure you can really vet a player like this as I’m sure whatever team that drafts him will be hoping for the best and be confident in their staff. When it comes to defensive line players I am not confident in many other position coach than I am in Jim Tomsula. I would love to see what he could get out of Beckner Jr. As far as his fit on the Redskins he certainly has the size and athleticism to kick outside to defensive end and move inside in nickel packages. If he reaches his potential he is going to be one heck of a disruptive player. Beckner Jr. will not only be looking to post great numbers but he will need to impress teams in interviews by assuring them he is finally over the hump and up to the task.
