Player Overview
One of the best players to come through Coral Gables in the last ten years is Travis Homer. A 3-star recruit back in 2016 Homer had his pick of Alabama, Florida State, Florida, and Notre Dame. Instead he decided to come down from West Palm Beach, Florida and join the Hurricanes. Homer did everything that was ever asked of him. His first starting action was during his sophomore season where he took over the rushing duties from an injured Mark Walton. Homer took his opportunity and literally ran with it. Homer in large part was the definition of consistency on a horribly inconsistent Hurricanes team during his college career. Playing behind a below average offensive line Homer struggled at times but you always knew that eventually he would break one. Despite being entrenched in the starting role you could still find Homer on kick coverage looking to make a key tackle. Also to his credit he was a key tackler on many a horrible interception return too. He also is probably one of the best running backs in the class as far as pass protection as he does not bow down to any defender and will take them on to the best of his ability. Miami has encountered some horrible slumps during the past two seasons as well and Homer was always there as a vocal leader to get his team motivated and back on track. Named team captain this season he was also named to the All-ACC Second team twice. He tested very well athletically at the combine and should tick most of boxes for teams looking for a solid addition to their rotation. Due to a deep class at a variety of positions and a lack of top tier talent at the running back position Homer figured to be an early day 3 pick and a huge value for any team looking to upgrade and add quality depth at the position.
Strengths
- Excellent athleticism, toughness, physicality, and versatility for the position.
- Shows good vision and patience when picking his running lanes. Despite his physical build shows valuable toughness and durability to grind out tough yards while still showing explosion and athleticism to break off big gains. Short area agility allows him to wiggle in tight quarters and gain a few yards where it should be a loss.
- Has the speed and athleticism to pop off big gains when he has space. When he has some speed going also shows some good power and is not afraid to make contact. Also dangerous as a receiver in the flat and down the field and shows good reliable hands. Can make guys as the second level miss.
- Excellent in pass protection and will square up and take on anyone. Greatly effective at neutralizing power and speed on blitz pickups.
- Has no problem playing special teams and praised as a team leader and motivator.
Weaknesses
- Ball security. Travis has his worse year this past season protecting the ball with 4 fumbles and losing 3 of them.
- Has below average size and some might be concerned how he will hold up at the next level given his stature.
- Doesn’t have that second gear to pull away from completely from defenses and can be caught in open space. Doesn’t have elite quickness or agility either.
Let’s see his work:

How He Would Fit On The Redskins
Homer would be an excellent pick in day three of the draft to help fill out the Redskins backfield. As of this post it looks like the Redskins are allowing Adrian Peterson to test the market and the Redskins need another option on the roster besides Guice, Thompson, and Perine. Speaking of Thompson if he doesn’t become a cap casualty this offseason he will be entering the final year of his current contact this upcoming season. Homer would be the obvious choice to replace Thompson in that 3rd down back role. Homer would offer a bit more than Thompson as well. For one he might automatically be the best pass protector at the position on the roster. Two he has shown he has no issue hauling in the ball as a receiver and he has the ability to run in between the tackles or stretch it outside as well with some power as well. And last but not least he has shown that he can remain healthy throughout his career so far. Homer could become a special part of the offense so should the play caller decide to feature him in the right situations. If he doesn’t get carries on the field immediately he will always earn his keep as a contributor on special teams. He represents one of the best values on day 3 it would be wise of the Redskins to take a look.
