Washington working on trade for Broncos QB Case Keenum

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

A year ago, Washington acquired quarterback Alex Smith and signed him to a sizable contract extension in hopes that he would settle their quarterback position for at least two or three years. Unfortunately, a nasty leg fracture is likely to keep him off the field for 2019, and could very well result in the end of his career.

Without Smith, Washington’s quarterback depth chart includes Colt McCoy, Josh Johnson, and Mark Sanchez. It’s a veritable who’s who of mediocre quarterbacks that have managed to stick around the NFL.

Washington appears to have some kind of solution in mind, negotiating a trade with the Denver Broncos to acquire Case Keenum. A year ago, Keenum signed a two-year, $36 million contract with Denver after an astonishingly good year with the Minnesota Vikings. The deal included a $6 million signing bonus, a fully guaranteed $8 million salary in 2018, and $7 million of his $18 million base salary for 2019 fully guaranteed.

Keenum reverted to form last season, and Denver’s search for a long-term option at quarterback continues. Broncos beat writer Mike Klis offered up some details on a trade involving late day three picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Someone asked if this means Washington is out of the market for Josh Rosen if Arizona decides to deal him. I think I summed it up best.

Keenum is a short term option, but I think it’s a safe bet that he is not in Washington when 2020 arrives. Maybe he balls out like he did in Minnesota, but consider me just a little bit skeptical.

I’m curious to see if Washington gets aggressive for a younger quarterback for the long-term, or what exactly they have in mind. I don’t see them as a trade-up candidate in the draft next month, but I still think they would be in the market for Rosen if the situation presented itself.
