49ers’ wide receivers aren’t high on SI’s list

They can’t be that bad, can they?

The San Francisco 49ers still have lots of things to fix with their roster in 2019, and one of the units that can use some help is the wide receivers. As a whole, the group hasn’t been awful, but its lack of a No. 1 target and injuries made things subpar for 2018.

So subpar they aren’t that high up on rankings across the NFL. Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr ranked the unit’s situation as 26th in the NFL. When making this ranking, Orr put things like salary cap into consideration and rates them based on the overall situation—not sheer talent alone. He lists the top-4 salaries, which is why you won’t see Kendrick Bourne listed below.

26. San Francisco 49ers ($10.3 / $193.1 million)

Marquise Goodwin, Jordan Matthews, Dante Pettis, Trent Taylor

The strength of this team will be the openings they create with the run. Still, the 49ers aren’t hiding the fact that they’d like to upgrade.

The problem with the wide receivers was durability. The 49ers can use a big-bodied wide receiver, especially with the loss of Pierre Garcon, but when healthy, the wide receiver group is a bit underrated.

In front of the 49ers is the Arizona Cardinals, followed by the Tennessee Titans and the Carolina Panthers. Whether the 49ers are better or worse than any of those groups is up to you.

Goodwin’s frequent absences hurt the team last year as he fought injuries and the loss of a pregnancy during the season. Dante Pettis also had his own injury issues, but when healthy he was a big contributor.

Do you think the 49ers wide receivers should be in this rank?
