Are the Bucs trying to trade Gerald McCoy?

According to an NFL insider, the Bucs are shopping him “hard”.

We all know the story with Gerald McCoy by now.

He is one of the team’s highest-paid players. He is now on the wrong side of 30 years old. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in cap trouble.

So, put three and three together and it makes six, right?

In this instance it appears that way. In order for the Bucs to clear the cap room they need, it likely means that a player like McCoy is out the door.

McCoy no-showed on Monday for the first day for Bruce Arians’ voluntary off-season workout program.

The key word there is voluntary - McCoy, along with others, are not required to show up. The reason for his absence is unknown to the public at this point, but NFL insider Michael Lombardi shed some possible light on the situation:

If it comes down to releasing or trading the former All-Pro, then the obvious choice would be to trade him and get something in return, so it’s good to see Tampa Bay entertain that idea.

It does come as a surprise that no one is biting, though, based off how important an interior pass rush - while the importance never left - has become over the past couple of seasons.

Arians even said last week that McCoy “isn’t the same player he was four years ago” but “is still someone you have to game plan for.”

Regardless of how this story unfolds, it doesn’t look like McCoy will be in the pewter and red come opening weekend of 2019.
