College Scouting Report: Brian Burns

If the Bills go defense early, he may be an option.

The draft is under a week away and people are unsure what direction the Buffalo Bills will go in the first round. With the uncertainty at the top of the draft, there’s no telling who’ll be available to the team when they’re on the clock at pick nine (or elsewhere, provide a trade up or down happens). One of the possible options they can go with is former Florida State defensive end Brian Burns. When it comes to pure pass rushers according to reporter John Mitchell of Fansided, Burns might be the best. CBS’s Ryan Wilson also agrees with that thinking that it’s a possibility Burns can be taken by the Oakland Raiders at pick four.

Strengths:

His athleticism is off the charts which is making teams fall in love with him. Wilson said that “Burns is an explosive edge rusher who is surprisingly strong. He regularly wins to the outside with his speed but showed the ability to run stunts inside as well.” Burns wide arrow of moves make him a difficult match up according to Mitchell. “He blends an excellent array of pass rushing moves with his elite athleticism and speed, making him nearly impossible to block in one-on-one situations on the outside.”

Weaknesses:

Weaknesses are hard to find in the case of Burns but there may be one or two things that teams will be looking at. Wilson feels he needs to get better with his hand usage and his pass rushing moves. That is not the worst thing because he is a guy that works hard and will be working on improving those parts of his game day in and day out. Mitchell pointed out the curious situation of Burns only having one sack in the last five regular season games for Florida St. Did he run out of gas?

Would he be a good fit in Buffalo?

Burns would fit well in Buffalo, largely due to the team needing more pass rushers. Jerry Hughes is coming off a great season but he is getting up there in age and may only have a couple great years left. On the opposite side of him there is uncertainty with Trent Murphy who battled injuries last season and former first-round pick Shaq Lawson (Whaley guy not Beane) who has not yet reached the expectations laid out for him. Adding a young explosive guy in Burns would undoubtedly improve the Bills’ front four for the best.
