Nine years ago on Easter, the Redskins announced they had traded a second-round (37th overall) pick in the 2010 NFL draft and a conditional third or fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.
I can still remember the sick feeling I had that day when I learned of the news.
I was on my way to Pennsylvania to visit my family. When I arrived at my mom’s house, and got out out of the car, she was waiting for me in the driveway. The first things she said was, “did you hear your team traded for Donovan McNabb?”. Yes...my mom broke the news of the trade to me. I immediately felt sick to my stomach, and wove a tapestry of obscenity that, as far as we know, is still hanging in space over Clarks Summit, PA today!
McNabb went on to have one of the most lack-luster quarterback seasons in recent Redskins history, starting 13 games, compiling a 5-8 record, while throwing 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions to go along with an abysmal 58.3 completion percentage and and QBR of 55.3.
That would be his one and only season in D.C.
Fast forward 9 years...
There are rumors that the Arizona Cardinals will select Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the number one overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Just last year, they moved up in the draft to select quarterback Josh Rosen from UCLA at pick number 10 overall. If Murray is indeed the pick, the team is expected to trade Rosen to the highest bidder.
...enter the Redskins!
Bruce Allen and company have been linked to Rosen via trade since the smoke began to rise that Murray could indeed be selected at number one overall. Talking-heads have speculated that the cost for Josh Rosen could be a 2019 second-round pick and a 2020 conditional mid-round pick.
Sound familiar?
Now, the situation surrounding Rosen is much different from the one surrounding McNabb in 2010. Rosen is a young quarterback entering just his second year in the league, with a ton of up-side, while McNabb was an 11-year established veteran on the down-side of his career when he was traded. Still, the need for a quarterback, the potential compensation, and the certain holiday could be eerily similar.
Could the ole’ rabbit bring Redskins fans a new Easter Treasure, or will he just leave “droppings” to let everyone know how he truly feels about the franchise in D.C?
