Who should the Lions target if the move back to 15-ish?
For the past four months, most of the conversation surrounding the Detroit Lions’ draft has been focused on the eighth overall pick. Ed Oliver, T.J. Hockenson, Brian Burns, Montez Sweat. All of these prospects and much more have been discussed as a possibility when the Lions are first on the clock.
But what if the Lions do what general manager Bob Quinn has been telegraphing for the past few weeks? What if the Lions trade down in the first round to somewhere in the middle of the draft?
There will be a completely different set of players available in the 13-17 area, but we haven’t talked much about those players. So today’s Question of the Day is:
If the Lions trade back to the middle of the first round, who should they target?
My answer: There are a few positions that come into play that some consider too high at number eight. The Lions could take a cornerback—be it Amani Oruwariye, Byron Murphy or Greedy Williams—that would make sense here. It would also be a lot more palatable if the Lions went offensive line or tight end around the 15th pick or so.
But don’t count out another prospect on the defensive line. Clemson defensive tackle Christian Wilkins would be in play, or perhaps a guy like Rashan Gary or even Brian Burns falls that far.
Ultimately, I think I’d be looking for a top cornerback. No. 2 cornerback is a top need for this team, and I think middle of the first round is pretty good value for whoever the Lions’ top cornerback is in this year’s draft. While it’s true there’s a decent amount of depth at that position, why not go out and get the top corner on your board?
Your turn.
