Packers draft S Darnell Savage after trading up to 21st pick

The Packers now have a great add for the back end of their defense.

After adding to the Green Bay Packers’ front seven with Rashan Gary at the 12th overall pick, general manager Brian Gutekunst made a big move upwards from the 30th pick. Gutekunst made a trade with old pal John Schneider, the GM of the Seattle Seahawks, trading the 30th pick and the Packers’ two fourth-rounders at 114 and 118 for pick number 21.

That pick is safety Darnell Savage from Maryland. Savage ran a blistering 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the Combine in Indianapolis this year and immediately slots in as a starter at free safety with slot coverage ability. Savage’s explosiveness is also excellent, with a 39 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-6 broad jump.

Savage, who stands 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds, is a great ballhawk with eight interceptions in his college career. As a senior in 2018, he recorded 52 tackles with 5.5 for losses and four picks. This selection makes him the first defensive back off the board in this year’s draft.

This move likely solidifies the Packers’ intended move of Tramon Williams back to cornerback, as Savage should pair with newly-signed safety Adrian Amos on the back end of the defense.

In addition, this trade seems to work out beautifully for the Packers. They were able to hold on to both of their day-two draft picks at 44 and 75, and they could move back into round four by unloading some of the four picks they still hold on day three.
