Packers select TE Jace Sternberger with 75th pick in 2019 NFL Draft

Green Bay has its tight end of the future.

The Packers have their tight end of the future. After drafting two defensive players on day one of the 2019 NFL Draft and landing an offensive linemen in Elgton Jenkins in round two, the Packers have selected Jace Sternberger from Texas A&M in round three with the 75th overall selection.

Sternberger took an official visit to Green Bay this spring, so he has been on their radar. He was one of the most productive receiving tight ends in college football in 2018, racking up over 800 yards and ten touchdowns through the air. 2018 was Sternberger’s only season in College Station, as he started his college career at Kansas and transferred after two years there.

The 6-foot-4, 251-pound Sternberger ran a 4.75-second 40-yard dash at the 2019 NFL Combine in Indianapolis this year, a solid if unspectacular time that appears slower than he plays on tape. Questions exist regarding his ability as a blocker, but a Matt LaFleur-led offense will require him to develop that part of his game in the NFL to become

Here’s more on that from SB Nation’s Christian D’Andrea:

While his blocking is still a work in progress, he catches anything thrown into his vicinity. His wide frame allows him the leverage to box out defenders on shorter passes and create a big target for his quarterback, becoming an inaccurate Kellen Mond’s favorite playmaker and safety valve all at once.

With Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis in Green Bay for 2019, Sternberger will be able to work his way into the lineup gradually before being expected to take over as the starting tight end in 2020. However, he provides a quality receiving threat from the tight end position who can contribute on day one.
