Panthers boost offensive line and pass rush in latest mock draft round-up

The Panthers will have several options to choose from at No. 16 overall.

As the NFL Draft draws closer, the debate for the Carolina Panthers’ most dire need continues. Should the Panthers go after one of the many touted edge rushers or nab a standout offensive tackle?

In this year’s edition of SB Nation’s NFL writer’s mock draft, Bradley Smith believes finding someone to protect Cam Newton is more ideal with the No. 16 pick.

16. Carolina Panthers: Andre Dillard, OT, Washington State

Enter Andre Dillard, the former Washington State Cougars standout, who is an ideal fit for the Panthers with his technically sound pass-blocking ability. Dillard is one of the top pass protectors in this year’s draft class, and while his run blocking needs some work, the Panthers can scheme around that while he learns on the job.

I agree, this wouldn’t be a bad choice for the Panthers. His footwork is impeccable and his athleticism would be boost for the blind-side. While he lacks experience firing off the ball in the run game, he makes up for it with his explosiveness and quickness.

What others are saying

SB Nation’s Dan Kadar is on the other side of the debate predicting Carolina will fill in the roster with a pass rusher.

16. Carolina Panthers: Clelin Ferrell, EDGE, Clemson

Offseason needs: Edge defender, offensive tackle, safety, guard

Although an offensive lineman shouldn’t be overlooked by the Panthers at No. 16, it would be hard to take something other than a pass rusher. That’s especially the case if Ferrell is still available. In fact, you have to wonder if the Panthers will get antsy and try to move up to make sure they get one of the draft’s top pass rushers.

Jared Dubin of CBS Sports is in the same pool with Kadar and likes Ferrell.

16. Carolina Panthers: Clelin Ferrell, EDGE, Clemson

With the top offensive linemen off the board, the Panthers go back to the well and draft another defensive lineman who can help make up for the departed Julius Peppers.

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports has another edge ahead of Ferrell for the Panthers.

16. Carolina Panthers: Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida State

Their pass rush was a problem in the second half of the season in 2018, so landing a speed rusher would make sense.

Conor Orr with Sports Illustrated agrees with Smith that Ron Rivera should add an offensive player, but not for the line.

16. Carolina: D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss

Personally, a pick that scares me a little bit given his tendency to run so many deep routes. Still, the Panthers have preferred to pair Cam Newton with large, physical receivers through the years. Metcalf is a game-changer in that he uses his size better than any of their previous options.

What do you think, Panthers fans? Which pick would you make?
