Projected top-10 pick Montez Sweat found to have unusual heart condition

Promising first round prospect has been taken off of several teams’ draft boards because of his unique heart condition.

The 2019 draft class is chalk full of defensive linemen, but the class might have just gotten a little weaker.

Montez Sweat, a defensive end out of Mississippi State, recently received some bad news following a physical.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, “without getting too technical...he has an enlarged heart.”

According to Pelissero, there are no other NFL players with this condition, but there are some European soccer players that have overcome it and found a way to play.

There would always be the risk that something could go wrong, but those risks might be minimized if teams take certain precautions during games and practices.

“Some more progressive teams,” said Pelissero, “some more progressive doctors have spoken with cardiologists and gotten comfortable with the idea that Montez Sweat would be able to play with this.”

While some teams are still comfortable with Sweat, some teams have taken him off their boards.

The Bengals have already hosted Sweat, but there is still no word yet on whether or not they are still interested. However, if he falls to the Bengals, it would create an interesting discussion. Up until now, it was more likely than not that Sweat wouldn’t even make it to 11th overall.

Now, with the draft less than a week away, we’ll just have to watch how it all plays out.
