Potential EDGE depth
The latest Top-30 visit for the Philadelphia Eagles was revealed earlier today: Louisiana Tech EDGE Jaylon Ferguson
Also visiting the #Bills today: Louisiana Tech edge Jaylon Ferguson, who heads to #Giants next, then #Colts and #Eagles, with #Cowboys, #Titans, #Rams next week. One of the most well-traveled prospects in this pre-draft process.

As Tom Pelissero notes, Ferguson has been a player of significant interest for a lot of teams this cycle. That makes sense for several reasons.
Firstly, Ferguson was not allowed to work out at the NFL Combine, as a he was charged with misdemeanor battery during his freshman season. You can expect teams to have questions about Ferguson’s off-field conduct since that incident, as well as on the topic of the fight itself.
Because Ferguson missed the Combine, teams have only had one opportunity to watch Ferguson work out. That was at the Louisiana Tech Pro Day, which was plainly a travesty of a day for Ferguson.

This is his SEVENTH attempt after several slips.

Ferguson’s 8.08s 3-cone and 5.12s short-shuttle are historically poor numbers for an EDGE defender, and illustrates the lack of agility that is present on Ferguson’s tape. This summary, from The Draft Network’s Joe Marino, details how Ferguson’s lack of flexibility caps his NFL ceiling.
The NCAA all-time leader in sacks, Ferguson projects as a base end in a 4-3 alignment. While Ferguson is effective with his hands and features good functional strength, his pass rushing upside is softened by modest burst and a severe lack of flexibility. Ferguson is a smart player who diagnoses plays well and is a stout run defender. Expecting him to duplicate or even come close to his collegiate production is far too rich, but Ferguson can play a valuable role in an NFL defense by effectively defending the run and compromising the width of the pocket.
That production is exciting, though. Ferguson’s 45 career sacks place him first all-time on the NCAA’s list of career rushers, and his 68 TFLs is third — that’s wild production. At the NFL level, he can’t be expected to out-class his opponents so easily, and accordingly that production is likely going to plummet.
For Philadelphia, Ferguson would likely cost a Day 2 selection, though I’m sure he’s more of a trade-back target than he is an option at pick 53 or 57. Ferguson would offer good depth in Year 1, but likely would never crack the starting rotation given his modest upside.
