Originally from Long Beach, CA, Ryan Pope spent a year at Long Beach City College before transferring to San Diego State and red-shirting for a year. During his junior and senior seasons, he started 24 games, and played both left and right tackle during his senior year. His senior year was sufficiently accomplished that he was named Second Team All Mountain West in 2018. His athleticism comps are impressive - approximating guys like Ryan Ramczyk (first round pick), Andrus Peat (first round pick), Orlando Franklin (second round pick), and Mike Adams (second round pick) - but the concern is that his technique and the application of his strength aren’t producing a on-the-field product that matches. To top it all off, Pope was manhandled by Jordan Brailford in the Shrine Game, surrendering a sack, and likely hampering his draft stock.

How He Would Fit On The Redskins

Pope was a medalist at the Underwear Olympics, but there appears to be a significant gap between his potential and his reality. If there wasn’t, however, he would likely be a first or second rounder. So, if scouting staff and Bill Callahan see an opportunity to successfully mold a guy like Pope, he could potentially be a late round or UDFA steal. Pope’s versatility at the line is reminiscent of Geron Christian’s, and if the coaching staff are confident that Christian is making the necessary strides, a player like Pope may be superfluous. On the other hand, Pope’s athleticism may be sufficiently attractive that he could be brought into camp to compete for the swing tackle role outright.
